As a Senior Data Scientist, you will help shape the future of data science at Moderna by applying advanced machine learning to real-world biotech challenges. You’ll join a high-performing, cross-functional team at the heart of our business operations and product innovation. This role is an opportunity to drive impactful data science strategy while remaining deeply technical—designing, building, and deploying cutting-edge ML systems and tools, with a particular emphasis on NLP, LLMs, and scalable cloud-based architecture.
Expect to work closely with engineers and analysts in developing data-driven solutions that feed directly into Moderna’s platform capabilities. You’ll also mentor junior team members and ensure our machine learning pipelines are production-grade, robust, and efficient.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Your key responsibilities will be:
Design, develop, and implement machine learning algorithms and statistical models to solve complex business problems across functions.
Conduct rigorous experimentation and iterative testing of ML models to drive accuracy, performance, and business alignment.
Partner closely with Data Engineers and Software Engineers to embed ML solutions in scalable, cloud-based production environments.
Deliver strategic insights through advanced analytics aligned to business and scientific goals.
Ensure alignment between model development, deployment processes, and Moderna’s enterprise architecture.
Your responsibilities will also include:
Champion and guide best practices across the data science lifecycle.
Mentor junior data scientists and conduct code and model reviews.
Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and standards development.
Utilize and optimize modern ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and CI/CD pipelines for automated model deployment.
Lead initiatives leveraging Generative AI, NLP, and transformer-based architectures (e.g., prompt engineering, semantic search, and LLM tuning).
Work with pharmaceutical data platforms such as Veeva (CRM, Vault) and IQVIA.
The key Moderna Mindsets you’ll need to succeed in the role:
“We digitize everywhere possible using the power of code to maximize our impact on patients.”
This role is deeply embedded in Moderna’s digital fabric. You’ll be leveraging code-first approaches to create transformative data products, scale intelligent systems, and integrate novel machine learning capabilities into critical functions.“We obsess over learning. We don’t have to be the smartest; we have to learn the fastest.”
To stay ahead in the fast-evolving AI and biotech space, you will need a mindset grounded in relentless curiosity, experimentation, and adaptation—especially as you push into new territory with generative AI and NLP.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or related quantitative fields.
Deep knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistics, and data modeling techniques, with 5+ years of hands-on experience.
Proficiency in Python and experience with ML libraries/frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar.
Experience with ML development on cloud services (AWS, Azure, Databricks, GCP).
Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
Knowledge of CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI) and version control systems (e.g., Git).
Strong experience with SQL and familiarity with handling large datasets, data preprocessing, and feature engineering.
Excellent ability to clearly communicate complex data science concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table
Prior experience working with pharma industry data platforms, especially Veeva (CRM, Vault), IQVIA, or similar platforms.
Demonstrated expertise in deploying, managing, and monitoring advanced NLP and LLM models
Deep expertise in transformer architectures, prompt engineering, semantic search techniques, and generative AI applications

What We Do
At Moderna, we believe messenger RNA, or mRNA, is the “software of life.” Every cell in the body uses mRNA to provide real-time instructions to make the proteins necessary to drive all aspects of biology, including in human health and disease. Given its essential role, we believe mRNA could be used to create a new category of medicines with significant potential to improve the lives of patients. We are pioneering a new class of medicines made of messenger RNA, or mRNA. The potential implications of using mRNA as a drug are significant and far-reaching and could meaningfully improve how medicines are discovered, developed and manufactured.
