The Role
Job Description SummaryThe Safety Management System (SMS) Focal is responsible for leading the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the company’s Safety Management System to ensure product safety. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, promotes a culture of safety, and drives initiatives to mitigate risks to ‘As Low As Reasonably Practicable' and improve safety performance across the organization.
The role will be critical to demonstrating to the regulator our commitment to the changes that are being implemented around regulation and oversight of SMS. This is an exciting opportunity to be engaged at the inception of a significant change in the way regulation is executed and is likely to grow as the new regulatory process matures.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, implement, and maintain the Safety Management System (SMS) in alignment with regulatory and industry requirements, including safety management documentation.

  • Identify, analyze, and manage safety risks and hazards to reduce risk to As Low As Reasonably Practicable, including facilitating hazard analyses and ensuring robust root cause analysis and just culture in investigations.

  • Monitor, audit, and evaluate SMS effectiveness, including internal and external/customer/regulatory audits, inspections, assessments, and independent review of investigations.

  • Collect, analyze, and report safety data and performance, identifying trends, proposing improvements, and providing regular reports and presentations to the Accountable Manager, Safety Review Board, and other stakeholders.

  • Design, deliver, and coordinate SMS training and safety promotion, including recurrent training, awareness campaigns, and the effective distribution of safety information.

  • Mentor, coach, and build safety culture, providing guidance on SMS principles and promoting an open, just, and proactive safety environment across the organization.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate safety practices into daily operations and ensure alignment of SMS objectives with organizational goals.

  • Apply and embed lean/Flight Deck principles (such as Daily Management and Standard Work) within the SMS and team processes to monitor performance and support the business operating system.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED) with a minimum of 4 years of experience in safety management, risk assessment, or quality assurance, preferably in aerospace or manufacturing and 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment

  • In-depth knowledge of Safety Management System (SMS) principles and requirements, and working knowledge of relevant regulations (e.g., FAA Parts 145/21, EASA, OSHA).

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills such as using root cause analysis tools, conducting safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.

  • Digital proficiency/computer literacy with the ability to effectively use relevant software and systems to support safety and quality activities.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams.  Also, to interact effectively with senior leadership, regulators, and customer/operator representatives.
