Responsible for the operational management of the Property Catastrophe Claims organization. Provides strategic oversight and is accountable for delivering superior catastrophe response capabilities and business results through efficient and accurate claim file management. Owns Property Field and CAT property workload / resource management, CAT event monitoring / assessment, response planning and execution, reporting / communication, and TPA / IA oversight. Participates in the development and effective execution of strategic priorities and provides oversight, operational and leadership backup support for the line of business leader.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
- Leads and directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with corporate strategic policies and direction.
- Contributes to organizational profitability by ensuring that claims are effectively managed in accordance with external regulatory and internal company guidelines and standards.
- Partners with manager on the implementation of Property CAT business strategies and continuous improvement objectives by regularly evaluating performance against goals and holding self and others accountable for achieving and improving team results and CAT response capabilities.
- Collaborates with internal and/or external business partners to ensure optimal CAT response planning and execution. Collaborates with business partners on implementation of business strategies, regularly communicating with management and key stakeholders regarding progress and status updates on applicable CAT events, claim files, claim trends and legal changes that may impact total claim outcomes and other relevant business results.
- Manages loss costs and claim expenses by effective utilization of resources within established budget, and achieves productivity and efficiency standards by leveraging systems capabilities, data and metrics to analyze trends and improve organizational and process performance. Seeks opportunities to leverage internal CNA Property Claims resource capacity and manage / control ULAE and ALAE associated with vendors.
- Participates with senior leadership in the development and implementation of claim policies, business strategies and goals, regularly evaluating performance against goals; and holding self and team accountable for achieving desired results.
- Oversees coverage determinations and appropriate use of the referral process of the operation and/or line of business by assisting in coverage strategies, identifying learning opportunities and working with Claims Learning to design and deliver developmental curriculum.
- Provides ongoing leadership and back up support to Line of Business Leader on operational management, projects and meetings, as needed.
- Provides coaching and mentoring to claims professionals by providing insights and guidance on complex claims situations within the CAT team and overall Property Field and CAT operation.
- Remains current and shares knowledge regarding state/territory regulations and issues, industry activity and trends. Continually explores advancements in process, technology and operating models to enhance CAT response capabilities and execution. May represent company in industry trade groups.
- Monitors weather as well as current events to anticipate potential CAT events and provide support / direction in completing impact assessments, exposure mapping, and delivering communications related to CAT monitoring.
- Deploys for CAT events to provide oversight and support to CAT contractors during onboarding and initial handling after Major CAT events.
May perform additional duties as assigned

- Ability to identify, lead, coach, develop and retain talented claim professionals and managers.
- Ability to effectively interact and collaborate with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners, possessing excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
- Advanced Commercial Property technical and business management acumen, investigation and claims resolution skills.
- Strong knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices and procedures. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and teams.
- Ability to creativity and effectively manage through ambiguous and challenging business problems, lead through change and take appropriate levels of risks. Ability to exercise independent judgment and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to effectively manage demand and capacity to drive improved workload distribution / balancing, productivity and expense management.
- Demonstrates exceptional strategic thinking skills Demonstrates the knowledge and understanding of when and how to use metrics to make informed business decisions.
- Strong project management experience and ability to act with a sense of urgency to advance priorities of the organization.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
- Must be able to deploy to catastrophe events with limited notice throughout the year for up to 3 weeks consecutively at a time.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred or equivalent experience.
- Prior management experience preferred.
- Professional designations preferred.
- Typically ten or more years of claims related experience

I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $87,000 to $178,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
