Job Description Summary
Responsible for administration and profitable operation of the Brokerage Programs line of business. Accountable for the selection of new business opportunities and the initial development and review of the potential program/product. Develops, implements and monitors underwriting guidelines to enable profitable growth contributing to corporate net operating income. Works collaboratively across all divisions and functions within the company to achieve business plans and avoid brand conflict in the market.

Job Description

Reports To: Scottsdale Brokerage SVP.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Establishes strategic business plans and makes recommendations for profitable growth to the Executive Vice President. Prepares, administers and monitors premium and loss ratio goals, budgetary objectives and forecasts through the use of key financial performance indicators to measure business performance.

2. Manages the entire program manager relationship for the organization. Identifies and negotiates agreements to add third party companies to write program business through Nationwide. Develops relationship and recommends compensation arrangements.

3. Establishes, develops and initiates all underwriting procedures and authority levels for third party program managers and company underwriting personnel. Approves accounts which exceed underwriting staffs authority, whether due to level of complexity, premium, class of business or coverage provided. Applies business knowledge to leverage industry trends, product innovation, technical advancements and assesses federal and state regulatory impacts.

4. Build and sustain strong and productive customer relationships with all company production sources, including general agents, program managers and re insurers. Develops and attracts new opportunities, further enhancing department product offerings. Influences relationships with program managers, agents, brokers and other customers.

5. Provides leadership to staff of underwriting leaders and front line associates. Recruits and develops key talent, leads change, communicates vision and goals, promotes workforce diversity, obtains results while generating a high level of associate engagement. Consistently demonstrates the Executive Competencies in support of the delivery of business objectives.

Breadth Across Enterprise:

This role is responsible for setting and executing the strategy of the Scottsdale Brokerage Programs department. Collaborates with leaders across the Scottsdale Group as well as across the Enterprise on business opportunities. Provides input in Scottsdale Group business strategy. Manages product/programs that incorporate multiple lines Management liability, professional liability, employment practices liability, medical malpractice, contractual liability, credit insurance, tenant default, surety, worked compensation.

Financial Responsibility and Scope:

2014 DWP - $276 m, expense budget - $1.6m. The program business leverages an outsource business model. This model requires a small group to manage a high premium volume; otherwise known as a high leverage model which requires unique skills to manage.

Leadership Accountability:

Developing Strategy: Responsible for development of the program strategy for the Brokerage operation.

Providing Input on Strategic Direction: Provides input on Brokerage and Scottsdale Group strategy.

Executing Strategy: This role has production as well as leadership accountability and as such is responsible for executing and overseeing the execution of the program strategy.

Team Composition:

Direct Rpts (5) 2 - Excess & Surplus Lines Territory Managers (H band), 1 Commercial Lines Manager (G band), 1 Sr Process Management Consultant, 1 Underwriting Consultant. Indirect Rpts (14) D-G band individual contributors. Also manages multiple 3rd party relationships whereby outside companies are contracted to write programs business using our underwriting rules and processes.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education/Certification/Licenses: High school diploma or GED required. College degree preferred. CPCU, RPLU, ASLI and other various specific technical seminars/instruction

Experience/Skills: Minimum of 8-10 years managerial experience in the Excess & Surplus lines and or Specialty marketplace. Knowledge of E & S Lines and Specialty marketplace, general agency and program manager distribution system. Experience in placement and administration of reinsurance on a treaty basis as well as facultative placements. Experience in negotiations, influencing and leading, maintaining relationships, building effective teams, and driving for results. Technical skills as well as interpersonal savvy, problem solving and strategic thinking.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experience may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.

Job Conditions:

Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt).

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
