We’re currently hiring a Staff TPM to work with the Infrastructure Engineering Productivity team in San Francisco:
The Engineering Productivity team at Cruise operates and supports many critical systems and services that enable Cruise developers. These span across the needs of source control, continuous integration, continuous deployment, platform as a service, testing analysis, testing automation, and more.
Technical Program Managers are responsible for the “when” and the “how of the engineering program”, and are held accountable for our teams delivering projects within the agreed upon timeline and requirements.
Planning
- Drive the formulation and review of department roadmaps and objectives on a quarterly and monthly cadence
- Balance short-term agile planning and process with long-term planning and risk management
- Maintain intimate knowledge of systems, and identify unnecessary complexity or unmet dependencies
- Turn requirements and product specs into implementation roadmaps, including identifying cross-team dependencies and balancing new projects with tech debt or other proactive initiatives
- Understand the bigger picture by using your technical expertise and problem solving abilities to prioritize and navigate blocking issues.
Execution
- Ensure smooth execution of programs and continuously improve execution over time
- Promote quality communication within the TPM group to efficiently execute, filter, summarize reporting across the department to resolve, raise issues and celebrate wins.
- Lead and improve multi-functional planning and execution processes for other TPMs to follow and clarify mitigation path for execution decisions
- Establish confidence from partner teams to continuously minimize distractions and encourage groups to maximize their output.
- Drive and create processes for team tracking and execution
- Perform risk management and scope management on projects, and identify blockers
- Take a vague problem, crisply frame the challenge, identify a path forward, and drive an initiative over the finish-line.
Delivery
- Partner with Product Manager and Engineering Managers to ensure acceptance criteria have been met, and that projects are completed and delivered on schedule
- Validate non-functional requirements such as latency, performance, scalability, and cost for programs are delivered.
- Communicate progress against schedule across multiple organizations
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Lead multiple cross engineering projects
- Develop project roadmaps and delivery plans
- Work with engineers to define project success criteria and objectives
- Communicate across teams and outside agencies about team progress & risks
- Refine processes & tools used by your team and its multi-functional contributors
- Own and report on project progress, proactively drive corrective action as needed
- Build trusted relationships with team members and all relevant partners
You may be a good fit if you have:
- 6+ years of shown TPM experience in fast-paced tech company
- The ability to adapt and operate under ambiguity
- Ability to influence without authority across engineering teams
- Excellent program management skills and experience
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
- Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science or prior work experience as a software engineer
- Familiar with Jira, confluence and the Atlassian stack is a plus.
- Consistent track record of working from ambiguity to detailed solutions.
- 2+ years experience in development, QA, backend, and/or infrastructure
- Experience leading sophisticated fast-paced critical engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams and organizations, often with conflicting priorities and schedules
