Career Opportunity: Special Project Coordinator

Position Summary

The Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM) is looking for a Special Project Coordinator to support our mission and the Latino community. The professional charged with guiding implementation of LCM's agricultural programming will possess the following characteristics:

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in the field of agriculture, horticulture and gardening
  • Enthusiastic about creating work plans, and teaching and training community members and youth in agricultural practices
  • Able to think outside the box and innovate across LCM agriculture programs
  • Personable with a passion for tactile and hands-on learning and teaching
  • Collaborative and has an entrepreneurial approach to their job
  • Exercises good judgment and has strong decision-making skills
  • Highly resourceful and able to set schedules and timelines


Employment Status/Term: Full-Time, Exempt | Scheduling: Flexible.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Special Project Coordinator is responsible for the following:

  • Guide implementation of agricultural programming; ensure achievement of intended program outcomes and facilitate effective communication with Siembra Salud and Siembra Raices staff.
  • Commit and provide agricultural technical expertise to the Milpa Garden Partnership per agreement with LCM and Comunidad Pixan Ixim and GC Resolve.
  • Craft engaging educational activities for approximately 20 students participating in Siembra Salud and Siembra Raices internship programs, in addition to 30 participating Siembra Salud households.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partners, content/career-specific experts, and community leaders in support of agricultural programming.
  • Strengthen current LCM agricultural work and processes and expand plan and execution for 2023 growing season starting in 2022 with tracking/managing inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Lead and facilitate training in agriculture-related topics to the staff and/or interns.
  • Develop, monitor and oversee the functionality and beauty of the Dorothy Patach spaces including spring set-up, planting, maintenance, irrigating, and fall breakdown from April through October.
  • Establish an education and production garden three blocks from LCM in collaboration with contractors, consultants and fellow agriculture experts for garden design and build-out; oversee Siembra Salud interns' maintenance of the garden.
  • Oversee care of Siembra Salud plants at a greenhouse located at Bryan High School.
  • Maintain understanding of project challenges and work with partners to develop coordinated solutions.
  • Facilitate data collection and analysis using prescribed tools (surveys, questionnaires, etc.) and ensure adherence to quality measures; craft required reports and disseminate to partners, stakeholders, and LCM Leadership as needed.
  • Participate in meetings, task forces, advisories, etc. and speak before community stakeholders on behalf of the project and LCM; facilitate media requests and program highlights across partners.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Conflict resolution - Guide problem-solving among stakeholders and project partners, accounting for the organizational needs and goals of each; ability to identify opportunities to clarify communication and address the needs of multiple partners.
  • Planning/organizing - Prioritizes and plans work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; sets goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional agriculture experience
  • Experience in program planning and implementation and ability to adhere to a prescribed evaluation plan and related tools
  • Community outreach, project management, communication and/or marketing experience helpful
  • Personal and professional qualities that allow for effective working relationships with multiple partners and community leaders

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university required with area of concentration in an agriculture or horticulture field
  • Additional two to five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English is required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance required
