GIS Project Specialist


GIS Project Specialist

This position reports to the Land Supervisor of GIS Services, which is a business unit of Alabama Power's Corporate Real Estate Department (CRE). The responsibilities include executing projects for CRE and for other departments across the Southern Company enterprise to deliver Geographic Information System (GIS) based solutions for data conversion, mapping, analysis, and other related tasks. The position will coordinate with the Supervisor to ensure the business unit is meeting the customer's needs.

Major Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Supports CRE and other customers with mapping, data management/conversion, and other related tasks
  • Designs project deliverables based on client need
  • Analyze aerial Imagery and LiDAR data
  • Stays abreast of current GIS industry trends
  • Provides input on support and improvement of ArcGIS Portal, and GIS Web viewers
  • Supports Supervisor and provides input regarding technology decisions, data acquisitions, project scoping, project workloads and priorities
  • Conduct and assist with end-user training

  • Degree in Geography, Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or related field preferred
  • GIS Professional (GISP) Certification a plus

  • Experience in a GIS field of 2 or more years is preferred
  • Prior experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro is highly desirable
  • Experience managing SQL and/or Oracle databases is a plus
  • Working knowledge of ArcPy/Python/Arcade and other scripting languages is a plus
  • Experience with authoring and managing GIS web services is a plus
  • Understanding and ability to read property descriptions and plot into GIS

  • Understanding of GIS theory and application
  • Demonstrable ability to fully comprehend user request and deliver solutions
  • Broad knowledge of Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS), and the application of other GIS technologies and current industry trends
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments with little direction
  • Proficiency with ESRI software
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal behaviors that encourage collaboration and teamwork
