Salary Range
$99,700 - $196,100
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like
As a component of the Radiation Protection organization, the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) provides internal and external customers with robust corporate requirements and infrastructure functions supporting a world class radiation protection program.
The RPP team consists of radiological engineers, technologists, and a quality professional.
The duties of the RPP Engineering Program/Project Lead are diverse and many.
On any given day, you may be asked to:
- Make strategic decisions on long-term direction of program
- Represent the RP Program in working with internal customers and outside organizations such as the Sandia Field Office
- Serve as final technical reviewer and approver for new and revised operating procedures, directives, and program initiatives
- Represent the program for internal and external audits and lead the development of corrective actions
- Manage special projects for technical studies and programmatic improvement initiatives
- Assist Department Manager with programmatic operations
- Maintain program ES&H documents and internal documents including Regulatory flow-down and improvement documents, Primary Hazard Screenings, Hazard ID and Controls, etc.
- Provide mentorship to RPP team and assistance/expertise to broader RP organization, as needed
- Lead hiring efforts to bring in new talent and build depth to the RPP
- Responsible for complex and impactful RP programmatic functions such as: ALARA, Radiological Emergency Response, Environmental Radiation, RPSC Management, RP Radiological Self-Assessment Program, Events Management, Radiological Modeling, RP Working Groups, Device and Source Registrar, etc.
The Engineering Program/Project Lead for the RP Program requires a strong technical background in programmatic and operational health physics and must have strong leadership skills to support the team's diverse objectives.
The Program Lead must also have excellent communication skills to interface with their team and represent them to all levels of management, principal investigators and external customers and agencies.
Qualifications We Require
- Master's degree or PhD in Nuclear Engineering or Health Physics, plus a minimum of (5) years' experience working at a DOE facility (or equivalent)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
- Knowledge and experience with 10CFR835, DOE O 458.1, etc.
- Knowledge and experience with large radiation protection program implementation
- Knowledge and experience with radiation protection operations
- Leadership, project management and customer-service experience

- Demonstrated ability to direct and mentor professional staff and technologists
- Demonstrated ability to effectively respond to, and direct others in, emergency and abnormal situations
- Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to interact effectively with RP and Line organization personnel, other Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) organizations, senior SNL management, external entities, and NNSA/DOE or other governmental agency officials
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse team of radiological engineers, health physicists and radiological control technicians
- Skilled in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety and protection reports
About Our Team
The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.
