The Workers' Comp and Auto No-Fault division of Optum collaborates with our clients to deliver value beyond transactional savings while helping ensure claimants receive safe and effective clinical care. Our innovative and comprehensive medical cost management programs include pharmacy, ancillary and managed care services from first report of injury to settlement.
The Director, Technical Project and Program Management will provide leadership for the Optum Workers' Comp PMO and management of the annual capital budget. The ideal candidate will have solid knowledge and understanding of the software development organization, Agile methodologies, project management, and experience with finance / accounting. This person will lead a team of project managers and scrum masters as they manage scope, schedules, stakeholders, and cross-functional challenges. Finally, this person must be a passionate advocate of Agile, and be able to educate the IT team to continue to increase their Agile maturity. The work schedule will be Monday - Friday, from 8am - 5pm EST or CST.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership to and be accountable for the performance of a team of project managers and scrum masters
• Interact with technical and business senior leadership to manage all IT projects supporting this business unit
• Lead and mentor your team as they develop and own program status and ongoing meetings, including setting agendas, driving direction and decisions, documenting meeting notes, action items, owners, and dates
• Lead and mentor your team as they develop and deliver status reports, project schedules and presentations for visibility and transparency to stakeholders
• Lead and mentor your team as they actively manage issues, risks / mitigations, actions, assumptions, and decisions, with noted dependencies
• Produce clear, concise, well-formatted presentations, reports, and communications
• Collaborate with colleagues to identify and resolve cross-team challenges and/or risks that threaten delivery dates
• Manage the annual capital budget, track monthly spend, and lead annual capital request process - in conjunction with Finance
• Be a passionate advocate for Agile across the business unit and lead the Agile education efforts
• Use metrics to measure the team's Agile maturity, identify opportunities for improvement, and devise plans for addressing areas of deficiency
• Establish and maintain solid relationship with internal customers across Technology, Finance and Business functions
• Lead the continuous transformation to Agile methodology within the organization including working to ensure consistency across Agile teams as appropriate
• Work to ensure capital hours are tracked appropriately across teams
• Work closely with peers to ensure that technology modernization efforts are integrated within projects
• Serve as coordinator/moderator for technical design sessions on larger initiatives
• Lead the PI Planning initiatives within the organization including the creation of consistent reports that denote progress within a PI
• Work directly with the practice management team and product owners to ensure appropriate sequencing is assigned to projects as well as determining how to calculate the value being delivered.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years in the IT profession
  • 5+ years of direct management experience
  • 4+ years of experience working in Agile
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • Experience leading the transformation of teams from Waterfall to Agile
  • Experience in PI Planning
  • Experience managing and leading cross-functional teams
  • Experience identifying cross-team operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems
  • Ability to manage multiple, detailed projects to a successful end while working under tight time deadlines
  • Ability to mentor direct reports in project management best practices and scrum master skills and techniques
  • Ability to define project scope, objectives, deliverables, timelines, dependencies, and proactively manage and devise contingency plans
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to initiate and own all aspects of multiple projects
  • Financial and/or accounting acumen


Preferred Qualifications:

  • SAFE Agile 5.1 Scrum Master certification - if not currently certified, must get certified in 120 days
  • Experience managing appdev teams that include the following roles: product owner, QA, Business analyst and development resources
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a virtual environment
  • Demonstrated ability to travel up to 25% of the time as needed
  • Solid communication, presentation, influencing, consensus building and reasoning skills
  • Proven operational and business acumen with ability to understand the key business systems and levers that influence operational performance
  • Solid quantitative and qualitative analytical skills with a "can-do" approach to solving problems
  • Demonstrated self-confidence and self-reliance in all aspects of this role to include escalation
  • Proven leadership skills, comfort working in a complex matrixed environment with the ability to collaborate, influence others, and build strong relationships across the broader organization
  • Ability to be flexible and work with ambiguity in a deadline driven environment

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
