Responsible for facilitating the global indirect buying programs and related procurement opportunities. Works with the various internal business and external partners to streamline how WFM sources products, focusing on partnership, transparency, integrity, and ease of procurement. Strives to maximize process effectiveness and minimize costs.

Whole Foods Market is seeking a talented and experienced Category Manager to join its Global Indirect Procurement team. The Category Manager will lead the Packaging & Store Supplies category within Whole Foods. Key leadership traits required include the ability to influence and form strong partnerships with business leaders, and independently managing multiple complex and competing priorities. This is a dynamic team with opportunities for innovative and hardworking individuals to make significant and visible impacts at Whole Foods Market. This role will report to the Senior Team Leader, Indirect Procurement.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support category strategy and review process in partnership with applicable Whole Foods teams
  • Lead category analysts to support the packaging & store supplies category.
  • Present analysis--both qualitative and quantitative--to Procurement leadership and key stakeholders prior to obtaining approval to award business
  • Manage the fundamentals of sourcing and supplier engagement activities including RFX, spend pattern analysis, contract analysis, bid evaluation, negotiations, and supplier consolidation
  • Work with business and finance leaders to identify and drive savings focusing on total cost of ownership
  • Hold review meetings with major suppliers, review service levels, growth trajectory, category movement and opportunities for additional savings
  • Manage distributor partner relationships to ensure consistent inventory and deliveries.
  • Establish reporting requirements for usage and provide guidance on financial targets
  • Monitor supplier transitions and off-program purchases, working with distributors and regions
  • Monitor overall usage & recommend item rationalization for additional savings and regulatory compliance
  • Active engagement and collaboration with sustainability, quality standards, and regulatory compliance teams to champion work that furthers our green mission initiatives and ethical standards.
  • Active engagement and collaboration with packaging engineers to ensure packaging meets WFM specifications and requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • 4 year degree or equivalent experience and at least 6 years relevant category management experience in packaging & store supplies categories.
  • Proven in-depth knowledge of indirect sourcing and procurement principles and industry best practices
  • Strong negotiator with proven ability in setting negotiation strategies and conducting negotiations
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to quickly evaluate and draw conclusions on large amounts of disparate data
  • Ability to mentor category analysts to enhance skillsets and drive results
  • Ability to lead collaboration and influence diverse stakeholders in adoption of effective process
  • Ability to explain and promote solutions with a focus on total-cost-of-ownership, program transition costs, and ease of implementation
  • Experience with procurement systems and familiarity with procure to pay technical platforms (such as SAP Ariba and Coupa)
  • Exceptional, proven project and team leadership and development skills
  • Advanced level skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Excellent communication including written, verbal, and listening skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in retail or consumer products industries
  • Experience in food service packaging
