WHO ARE WE?

Product Strategy is a newly established function in BARK’s Creative & Product Development team. We are obsessed with understanding the needs and problems of each of our customers (dogs and humans) and developing a compelling set of products and services for them.  We love turning consumer and market data into inspiring insights and briefs for our designers and product developers.  By generating great product ideas, evaluating each idea’s potential and fit with our portfolio, and seeing the “winners” through from concept through launch, we ensure that BARK offers a set of complementary and differentiated products that stand out in the market.   By connecting customer needs with BARK’s creative and product vision, we make dogs and their humans happy while driving BARK’s business performance.

WHO WE’RE SNIFFIN’ FOR:

We are looking for a strong, strategic leader who can develop and own the long-term product portfolio strategy for BARK across all product categories - Fun, Food, Home, and Health - and across all sales channels - subscription, e-commerce, retail, and marketplaces.

The VP of Product Portfolio Strategy & Planning is responsible for driving a close collaboration between each business line’s General Manager and the product development leads to develop a portfolio of products based on a deep understanding of our customers and the markets we operate in.

KEY DUTIES:

  • Build and lead a team of merchandisers developing assortment plans for the product lines and a team of project managers developing and tracking the timelines and resource plans required to bring products to market - from initial idea to launch.
  • Lead the identification and articulation of actionable customer insights and use those to develop and maintain a portfolio of differentiated, complementary, on-strategy products that will satisfy customers’ many needs--promoting customer acquisition, loyalty, retention, and BARK share of wallet
  • Partner closely with the product development leads across toys, consumables, health, and home
  • Oversee the translation of input/insights from marketing, content & social teams into promotional products rooted in culture and the zeitgeist.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with GMs and business unit leaders to build knowledge of market dynamics and trends, generate interest in new products, and the evolving creative direction for BARK.
  • Create and implement licensing and partnership strategy in close collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape to ensure BARK’s product portfolio is informed by the latest product trends, innovations in pet and adjacent industries, evolving customer needs, and competitive opportunities and threats.
  • Create and own the shared product roadmaps across our business lines and sales channels.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 15+ years of experience with developing consumer products/product strategy across multiple categories and markets. International experience is a plus.
  • Proven track record of turning customer and market data into inspiring insights and creative briefs for the product development and design teams.
  • Deep understanding of the product development process from initial brainstorming to launch.
  • Experienced in managing a complex product assortment to a strict budget and specific product costs.
  • Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain exceptional talent.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong team leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and commercial mind with an instinct for spotting and framing business opportunities.
  • Great interpersonal and diplomatic skills allowing you to seamlessly manage a complex set of internal and external stakeholders.

This position is a full-time exempt position. It is located on-site at our office in New York City. We offer health insurance for both you and your pup, 401k, wonderful team lunches, cold brew on tap, and a dog to pet anytime you wish.

ABOUT BARK

Here at BARK, we love dogs and their people. We’re looking to make all dogs happy throughout the entire world (we’re not kidding). Think Disney for dogs -- we make magic for dogs and their people through our products, events, and experiences.

Our ambition level is high, the opportunity is huge, and our love for dogs is through the roof! We launched in 2011 with BarkBox, a monthly-themed subscription of all-natural treats and clever toys. Since then, we've shipped more than 70 million toys and treats to the dogs across the world and use all of that direct customer feedback to inform new initiatives and ways to make magic between dogs and their people. We’ve since expanded into other offerings as well, as we aim to become THE Dog Company for every family with a four-legged, belly-scratch-loving, interspecies family member.
