Overview

We are seeking a full-time Technology Product Leader for our headquarters in the greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for managing a wireless solution such as Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, GNSS, or LTE through planning, development, launch, and long-term evolution within Garmin products.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and demonstrate the skills of a Technology Product Manager
    • Develop proficient use and knowledge of established standards and procedures
    • Establish quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization
    • Develop a professional approach to situations in which conflict is present
    • Learn to apply Garmin's mission, vision, values, and quality policy and enthusiastically exhibit enthusiasm for and a desire to see Garmin succeed
  • Develop an understanding of the strategic application of technologies within Garmin product lines:
    • Understand Garmin's values & vision to help set compelling and state-of-the art technology goals resulting in a superior product experience that answers the question "Why Garmin"
    • In collaboration with business leadership and product management, clearly identify essential features which result in a differentiated and superior product, while discerning and rejecting features and products that are overburdened or are not useful to the target custom
  • Learn and understand the voice of the customer in Garmin products:
    • Develop thorough market, customer and competitor understanding as inputs to the technology road-mapping process
    • Evaluate, review and support the development of technology development plans in partnership with business leadership and engineering to meet the agreed upon product vision and objectives
    • Exercise well aligned judgment regarding industry state-of-the-art, customer expectations, and product design tradeoffs
  • Support the definition of superior solutions for Garmin products:
    • Assist with the development and management of Garmin's worldwide vision and roadmap for a strategic technology in collaboration with business leadership, engineering, and product management that are in-line with leadership vision and satisfy the objectives of the business plans
    • Develop criteria for new technology applications or solutions including requirements, features, ecosystem strategy and ability to scale across product lines
    • Assist in the creation of compelling technology concepts in collaboration with engineering, business development, product management and business leadership resulting in integration with product development plans
    • Coordinate closely with engineering and vendors to define externally developed deliverables, as well as lead discussions on roadmaps and component selection for future platforms
    • Provide innovative solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques and understand the tradeoffs for implementation between a variety of compelling approaches
    • Perform advanced technical research on new technologies and define explorations with engineering to demonstrate the value proposition with business leadership
  • Develop expertise in technology usage within Garmin product lines:
    • Foster an understanding of technology utilization in Garmin products with product managers and effectively communicate impact or enablement of key product features
    • Provide training and assist different business units in understanding the technology in addition to providing them with assistance in selecting the right solutions for Garmin products
    • Provide training to product quality, serve as their expert in product-specific technology questions, and collaborate with the support team to understand technology centric product line issues in the field
    • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to assist with integration of new technology solutions and new applications into product platforms
  • Support a strategic technology within the product lifecycle:
    • Develop solutions to customer use cases using technology within a wide range of products during concept, development, production in collaboration with engineering, business development, business leadership and product management
    • Collaborate on cost tradeoffs with engineering and product management to deliver essential functions and best value

Other Responsibilities:
  • Attend industry tradeshows, customer meetings and other events as required
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics, or related field AND a minimum of 2 years experience in a Product Manager role or another relevant role AND a minimum 8 years combined experience in related engineering / functional management roles
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Experience leading development of IoT or embedded solutions
  • Experience working closely with hardware and software vendors
  • Must demonstrate effective ability to lead, drive and influence cross functional teams
  • Demonstrate domain knowledge and active participation in the markets served
  • Must possess proficiency in software design concepts
  • Self-motivated and demonstrating a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
  • Must demonstrate a strong passion for Garmin, including its mission, products, values and success
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to present data and product recommendations to engineering and product management
  • Demonstrates proficiency using MS Office skills (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
