The Senior Director, Product Portfolio Management leads and manages a large, complex, and strategically significant enterprise portfolio. In that function, this leader enables technology and business leaders to achieve goals in a timely & cost-effective manner through deliberate planning, increased visibility, and coordinated alignment of investments. The Senior Director drives ongoing portfolio operations including the intake and creation of new work, the facilitation of priority decisions with executive level teams, driving planning and producing roadmaps of work based on the strategy and priorities of the portfolio. The Senior Director is also responsible for overseeing the development, strategy, and lifecycle of supporting portfolio products. Their primary goal is to ensure these products are in sync with customer needs and contribute to the overall growth of the business. They often work closely with cross-functional teams and have significant influence on the direction of the portfolio's products.
This leader must build relationships with, influence, and develop a strong understanding of their portfolio's needs and problems to solve. This role is also accountable for the overall governance and prioritization of demand coming into the agile portfolio. This person will operate as a change agent for continuous improvement throughout their portfolio and operate with an agile-mindset in a product-centric engagement model.
Job Responsibilities:
Relationship Management

  • Builds long-term, strategic relationships and collaborates with senior stakeholders across the organization
  • Acts as a trusted advisor, single point of contact, and facilitates access to colleagues and subject experts within the business and technology
  • Facilitates discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution within the portfolio within a regular engagement cadence
  • Ensures appropriate feedback loops are in place so alignment remains consistent across the portfolio
  • Maintains a strong intuitive understanding of clients' needs, problems, industry, and business, assists clients in the formation of technology strategies, and acts to ensure that they are offered solutions aligned to these strategies
  • Analyzes and presents data looking at trends and problems that influence strategies
  • Creates a culture of continuous improvement and ensures retrospectives are occurring within the portfolio team and action is taken on relevant feedback
  • Addresses and resolves customer issues quickly
  • Defines and executes the product strategy, including feasibility assessments, competitive analysis, pricing, and positioning.
  • Creates and maintains short-term and long-term product roadmaps that align with business objectives and customer needs
  • Work in collaboration with cross-functional teams (technology, architecture, design, QA, etc.) to ensure timely and high-quality product development and launches.
  • Performance Metrics: Define, track, and analyze key performance indicators to evaluate product success and guide future product iterations and improvements.


Demand / Investment Management

  • Acts as single point of contact for demand management and work intake within portfolio
  • Supports the efforts to effectively plan work and prep it for portfolio decision making
  • Leads portfolio team working sessions and drives review, strategy alignment, and decision making around Investment approvals, prioritization, risk remediation, trade-offs, and metrics to optimize portfolio outcomes
  • Facilitates proactive dependency management and sequencing of all approved work
  • Provides full transparency and visibility to portfolio analysis & insights to include investment health reviews (progress to plan, budget, metrics)


Product Centric Value-Based Investment Creation & Decisioning

  • Drives the creation of product centric value-based investment charters that includes clear articulation of customer problem being solved, business value, and success measures
  • Facilitates portfolio go-no-go decisions to move value-based investment charters into discovery (technology planning/estimation)
  • Drives prioritization of approved value-based Investments with a focus on investments that generate the greatest value for the business
  • Sequences investments that are approved for discovery


Technology Driven Discovery Plan Creation & Decisioning

  • Drives the discovery phase through the creation of the technology plan charter that includes clear articulation of size/cost estimates, dependencies & capacity plan
  • Facilitates Portfolio team go-no-go decision on complete investment charter (value-based + technology plan)
  • Drives prioritization of approved complete investment charters based on value and estimates
  • Sequences investments ready for delivery and facilitates in-take with delivery teams


Job Qualifications - Experience/Education/Training:
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 12 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 10 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 7 years' experience in a related field; or 16 years' experience in a related field
  • 6+ years managing and leading employees and complex team efforts
  • Experience managing large complex portfolios including but not limited to: scoping, planning, decisioning, budgeting, status reporting, issue/risk management, stakeholder management, and communications
  • Previous experience in relationship and change management
  • Experience with product management and agile practices
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, influencing, negotiation, mentoring and personnel management skills
  • Previous experience directly managing a team
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment
  • Experience presenting to and working with senior leadership and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability and experience leading teams through change and transformation efforts
  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • Experience with Portfolio Management and agile lifecycle management tools is preferred
  • Experience with business support software applications such as MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, Visio, and Access) required
