Position Summary:

Pearson is at the forefront of using data to improve teaching and student learning. With over 10 million higher education students annually studying in our MyLabs, Mastering, Revel, Pearson+ and other digital learning products, as well as utilizing Pearson instructional and assessment content, we generate a lot of data. Within Higher Ed Product & Business Intelligence, our goal is to collect, curate, and put all that data to excellent use by implementing best-in-class data collection strategies, building a best-in-class data intelligence platform, providing self-service access to data for novice to advanced users, and conducting advanced data analytics & data science. We strive to provide the Pearson Higher Education business with the data-driven intelligence needed to understand our customers and the health of the business and to optimize the Pearson customer experience.

We are looking for a uniquely talented Data Product Manager who can advance the objectives of the Data Intelligence team. This is a multi-faceted position that requires strong data and analysis skills in combination with excellent project coordination, communication, and writing skills. The role is responsible to deliver data/technology/process requirements and documentation in support of implementation partners, team members, and the greater Product & Business Intelligence roadmap. This individual will be the go-to person for interfacing with the Data Intelligence team and will become a subject matter expert of the data used to support product and business insights. This is a highly collaborative role that will facilitate positive relationships and ways of working with partner teams and provide key support for other Data Intelligence team members. We are looking for an individual with strong interpersonal skills who can recognize when to adapt communication style, messaging, and level of technical detail based on the audience.

The successful candidate will have a high tolerance for supporting multiple concurrent products and projects and the multitasking and organizational skills to do so. This individual will need great attention to detail - without losing sight of the big picture - and enjoy breaking down ideas into tangible action items. The role requires a significant amount of hands-on data exploration and a willingness to get into the weeds of our data models, data lakes, product platforms and service layers. Strong critical thinking skills, the ability to navigate through various data environments, and a drive to understand the business is essential to succeed in this role.

High Level Responsibilities:

  • Capture and define detailed business, functional, and technical requirements for our data products and the data projects we support. Create additional documents as necessary for the implementation of the roadmap.
  • Represent the Data Intelligence team in key requirements and planning calls and understand when to bring team members into conversations.
  • Become a data expert - understand the realm of the possible as it exists today and develop an eye for what could be possible with the correct data collection and data integration strategies.
  • Provide thought leadership and vision for the application of data to business problems and subject matter expertise to stakeholders so they can better leverage our data for insights and key data pipelines.
  • Help scope, estimate, and prioritize work in an Agile environment for work requested of the Data Intelligence team and our data engineering partners.
  • Assist the Sr. Manager of Data Intelligence with management of team JIRA board, sprint planning, capacity planning, tracking of schedules, risks and dependencies, and development of a quarterly roadmap for the Data Intelligence team.
  • Assist with development and automation of Intelligence Objects.
  • Work across departments and collaborate with business managers, systems architects, engineering delivery teams, project managers, user experience, QA, and operations teams.
  • Serve as a point-of contact to our business partners and cross-functional teams for day-to-day management of Data Intelligence project plans.
  • Support data engineering partners in completing the implementation of deliverables by ensuring they have access to and complete understanding of acceptance criteria, requirements, timelines, and dependencies.
  • Partner closely with Program Management to report on the status of deliverables, understand program-level prioritization, and stay informed of incoming projects.
  • Develop best practices for Knowledge Management, for both internal and customer-facing documentation and other data assets.
  • Contribute to tools, documentation, and instruction as necessary to enable internal customers to increasingly use data independently.
  • Provide ad hoc query support for teammates and partners as necessary.

Competencies:

  • Leadership in an environment of uncertainty
  • Innovation from technology, process, and team perspectives
  • Minding the details and delivering results
  • Communicating and managing complexity
  • Working across functions/disciplines
  • Engaging and motivating others
  • Being a team builder/team player

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years experience in similar role
  • Minimum of 3 years product management experience, with demonstrated success in defining and delivering data/analytics solutions
  • Strong technical aptitude with knowledge of and experience working in cloud-based data environments and complex technical projects
  • Strong familiarity with SQL and database concepts
  • Experience interacting with individuals at all levels, good time management, and solid communication skills
  • Experience leading multi-functional project teams and working cross-functionally
  • Must be comfortable using web-based remote video and project collaboration tools to work with remote and geographically dispersed team members

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Being a strategic thinker, analytical, and detail oriented -- and having excellent problem-solving skills and a strong work ethic
  • Being a motivated self-starter, an evangelist for a data-driven culture, and desiring a deep understanding of customer needs
  • Experience with JIRA
  • Experience writing functional requirements
  • Experience with creating or interpreting logical and physical data models, such as ER Diagrams
  • Ability to read sequence diagrams, API contracts, and other technical documentation representing data flows
  • Familiarity with process flow and systems architecture diagrams
  • Experience using modeling tools like Lucidchart
  • Ability and willingness to learn structured and unstructured data systems
  • Experience with Snowflake, Google Big Query/Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Tableau, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics/Firebase, JSON Schema, GraphQL, OpenAPI/Swagger, Postman, Databricks, Git, Bitbucket, Gitlab, and programming languages like Javascript and Python are pluses
  • Coding experience beyond queries is not required, but the ability to understand code and read through stored procedures is a plus
  • Experience working with local, remote, and international teams to develop solutions
  • Familiarity with the software product lifecycle
