About the team

We are a “startup within a startup.” A small, cross-functional team working on one of Opendoor’s next plays. We believe that “what got us here won’t get us there,” and we need to constantly innovate to fully realize our mission of empowering everyone with the freedom to move. The specific opportunity we’re chasing is highly strategic with the opportunity to become a household name in real estate.


For the right candidate, this role should feel like the best of all worlds: the funding, supportive infrastructure and gravitas of a public company; with a full-stack, scrappy team building from scratch, immersing in customer needs, and iterating fast.


Our team is unique within Opendoor, and also for the technology industry more generally. We have c-level executive sponsorship to move fast and independently, and to build from first principles. Our team has experience building from “0 to 1” at Opendoor, Square, Dropbox, Uber, and Y Combinator-backed startups.


About the Role

As a Product Engineer and founding member of our team, you’ll flex across all parts of our business, building both customer-facing experiences and the platforms and tools that power them. You’ll tackle a variety of engineering challenges across mobile and web app development, inventory management, workflow automation, security and access control, and growth.


You’ll collaborate with research, design, product, operations and finance to understand requirements, build prototypes, invent new features, and deliver scalable products and services for both internal and external customers.


Most importantly, you’ll be part of the brain trust responsible for making the product a breakout success.


Note: We welcome candidates with no prior experience in real estate.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work on all phases of software development including ideation, prototyping, design and production
  • Build products, tools and services from scratch, as well as evolve existing systems
  • Apply your technical expertise to guide the team in making intelligent and pragmatic design decisions
  • Influence the technology and architectural roadmap of our team

Skills Needed

  • Great at what you do: You have a track record of 2+ years building and delivering production quality software systems. You’re an excellent coder, with strong debugging skills and knowledge of computer architectures, operating systems and algorithms.
  • Full stack: You have depth and breadth in multiple technologies including front-end user interfaces, backend services and databases. Experience using Rails, React and Next.js is preferred but not required.
  • Passionate about engineering quality, but also biased to action: You have high attention to detail and a high quality bar; at the same time, you’re willing and able to be scrappy, and know that the true test of an idea comes when we try it out with real customers in the real world. The right candidate is able to toggle between these mindsets depending on where we are in the development cycle.
  • Customer-first: You care about our customers, and you understand that we exist, first and foremost, to serve a customer need.
  • A creative problem solver: You have a proven track record of thinking “outside the box” to solve complicated and multi-faceted problems. You think top-down, bottoms-up and from multiple angles to make sure we’re being exhaustive and generative in the way we tackle challenges.
  • Humble:  You’re able and willing to “flex up and down” and roll up your sleeves to do whatever it takes to make the product successful.
  • Tenacious! You’re determined and resilient in the face of challenges, recognizing that “Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

For CO Residents Only, and in accordance with C.R.S. Sec. 8-5-101 et seq., the estimated base salary range for this role is $117,000 - $171,000 per year. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position in question based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. An Insider's view of Opendoor

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

My team works with our sales and support operators. We manage our multiple telephony platforms, including our call center software. Last year, we replaced our old call center vendor solution with a new custom-built telephony platform. Building the unique features each team has been one of our central challenges for much of the past year.

Now, I am one of the leaders on our team - I’m responsible for setting team vision, overseeing systems design for other IC’s, and leading P0 initiatives such as a pricing workflow overhaul that we launched after COVID-19.

Analytical problem solving requires creativity too. I always encourage my team to consider all the tradeoffs between different options - what if you need to solve the problem in 1 day?
