About the group
The Search & Recommendations Group is responsible for the discovery & searchable experience of all the content on Canva, whether it be the 100 million public assets or a user’s private content. Search is the platform that brings this content to our users, and a relevant and reliable search is a fundamental multiplier on the value of Canva as a platform.
You’ll be responsible for the product design for the private search experience, collaborating with your Product Manager to develop elegant and useful designs to get the right content into our users’ hands. This role will be instrumental in laying the foundations for search and recommendations excellence in Canva, getting into the technical details to design the best possible solutions. Working with several product teams, you’ll work with highly proficient engineers, tech leads, and product managers across Canva looking to make their content visible.

One of the principles of our design team is to ‘show the future’. As designers we transport the rest of the company into a future we’re yet to build. A big part of the role of a product designer at Canva is to be a visionary—visualising and reinventing the future of design.
Product designers at Canva take the dream and make it something everyone can relate to and rally behind. We start from the very early stages: finding the right problem to tackle, exploring ideas for how to solve it and then refining it into a coherent solution. Our product designers carry out research, brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and collaboration with our engineers to ship great products. We are empathetic user advocates and respect our users’ opinions through interviews, usability testing, and data analysis, as well as wireframing, flowcharting, and journey mapping to show the different stages that customers go through as they come into contact with Canva.
Goals you’ll achieve (0-6 month goals)
- Get to know our customers and conduct initial research to understand their needs when searching for private content in Canva
- Identify opportunities for short and long term improvements to the private search experience
- Collaborate with the wider group to drive a vision for global search, advocating for private search users.
What you’ll do
- Empower the designers who create our beautiful in-house content with a powerful set of tools to manage our content and workflow
- Create and maintain a design system to make building our internal tools a breeze
- Collaborate with the Senior Product Designer and Product Manager on a strategy and vision for this space
- Build the product features that will help millions of people to sell their designs on Canva
- Gather learnings to iterate through research and data—we have a close relationship with our Beta users which enables us to unearth valuable insights to improve their experience
- Bring a little “Canva magic” to the publishing experience
- Have an impact on millions of users who sign up or login to Canva every month
What we’re looking for
- A portfolio that demonstrates experience in product thinking where you have previously shipped UX/UI design for digital products.
- You are excited by regularly coming up with new ideas, shipping new products and features that address your users’ real needs.
- You are an empathetic user advocate that values the backing of research and data analysis when it comes to design
- You are a problem solver that’s excited by a challenge. You enjoy sitting in a room collaborating on ideas to confidently come up with simple solutions that everyone can move forward with
- you are an excellent communicator, you seek understanding first and strive to communicate clearly in a helpful way;
- You enjoy a little flexibility in your work. Our growth means there are constantly new things to work on every day, as such it’s likely that you’ll often be working across the board on new and exciting projects.
- You know when to be scrappy to get something delivered, and when to push back to really uncover the root user need
- You appreciate big picture thinking. While details are everything, creating an experience that always keeps our users in mind is equally as important.
- You are comfortable at formulating hypotheses and leading them with the team from ideation to execution and drive those learnings back to the team and organization
