We are on a mission to make car buying and selling fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We’ve set out to disrupt an $800B+ industry, using technology to bring transparency and convenience into the e-commerce business of buying and selling used cars.

And we aren’t stopping there. Long-term, we seek to bring that same openness and simplicity to car ownership too, with payments, maintenance, and insurance in one technology offering. At Shift, we’re building the tools that empower people to buy, own, and sell the cars that make life go.

About you:

You have a background in logistics or experience in the automotive, retail, or sales/CRM tooling industries, but also thrive in a customer-facing environment. Where customer service meets logistics, we’ll find you.

About the role:

Shift’s Internal Product team builds and manages the tools that run our business, including our CRM, inventory management tools, field operations systems, etc. We’re looking for a “player-coach” Group Product Manager to take on leadership of one of our internal product groups, Field Operations. You’ll manage and support a team of 1-2 product managers who will each focus on a subset of your overall product area, and you will also maintain direct responsibility for a specific area of the product, with an engineering squad and a backlog of your own. This hybrid role is a great opportunity to develop management and product leadership experience, while drawing on your well-established skill set as a PM.

What you’ll do:

  • Drive strategy and long-term vision for a product group within the Internal product team.
  • Maintain a multi-quarter roadmap for your product group.
  • Partner closely with leaders of the operations teams that use your products, ensuring close two-way collaboration and alignment.
  • Build a small but mighty team of PMs in your product group, ensuring that each of them is set up for success and has clarity on strategic priorities.
  • Serve as direct PM for one area within your product group, working closely with engineering and design partners on your squad. You’ll write user stories, groom and prioritize the backlog, write product requirements, and deliver features in one product area, while managing and supporting other PMs who are doing this in adjacent product areas within your group.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including user research, design, engineering, data science, sales, operations, and marketing.
  • Help Shift build a world-class product team, in addition to building the products themselves.
  • While we are a remote/distributed product organization, this role will require some in-person time with the teams that use your products.

What we ask for:

  • 6+ years of B2B/internal tools Product Management experience.
  • 2+ years of people management experience, ideally managing senior PMs.
  • Experience in the automotive, retail, sales/CRM tooling, and/or logistics industries.
  • Internal tooling experience.
  • Customer-first, user-centered mentality and approach to product management.
  • Experience driving “build vs. buy” decisions, and implementing both.
  • Ability to focus on a problem at hand while thoughtfully considering overarching company strategy.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong written and verbal communication to gain buy-in for product direction and crisply communicate product status updates.
  • Personal initiative and self-starter mentality; thrives in a rapidly changing, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Proven ability to identify, analyze, and solve ambiguous problems, showing a track record of making business decisions using relevant data and insights, and aligning with stakeholders and executives on those decisions.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, drive and willingness to roll up your sleeves, and do what’s necessary to move initiatives to completion.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and manage competing priorities in a priority changing, fast paced environment. You’re comfortable pivoting quickly and adapting to new context and priorities.
  • Willing to make in-person visits to Shift’s operations hubs (LA, SF, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio), including travel if you are not located in one of those areas.

Nice to have:

  • Experience at a startup or high-growth company.

On diversity

Our company depends on balance and equality — between buyers and sellers, among employees, and in our relationships with customers.

Our mission to evolve car ownership and transform an industry is a challenging one. It can only be achieved by a team of diverse problem-solvers — engineers, designers, business people — from the same broad demographics as our customers.

Why apply?

At Shift, we’re all about growth - which means people who are eager to grow, who are ready to roll up their sleeves and learn new things. We were founded by a scrappy group of visionaries who were by no means “car experts” - so we don’t expect you to be one, either! We’ll take the open-minded go-getter over the pure subject matter expert any day. In that spirit, we also care about building a diverse and inclusive workplace and company. To put it simply, cars are meant for everyone, so we believe our company should be, too. We never discriminate against any candidate on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, marital status, veteran status or disability status. We welcome and encourage people of all backgrounds and walks of life to apply, even if you’re unsure if you meet all the requirements. (Even if this particular role isn’t the right fit, chances are we will have the right one soon!)

Why join now?

Having gone public in October 2020, we are at the beginning of our journey and hope you join us for the ride! Shift is a leading end-to-end auto e-commerce platform transforming the used car industry with a technology-driven, hassle-free customer experience. Shift’s mission is to make buying or selling a used car fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We provide comprehensive, digital solutions throughout the car ownership lifecycle: finding the right car, having a test drive brought to you before buying the car, a seamless digitally-driven purchase transaction including financing and vehicle protection products, an efficient, digital trade-in/sale transaction, and a vision to provide high-value support services during car ownership.
