This role directly contributes to Motional’s future in mobility and redefining transportation as a whole. As a Vehicle Operator (VO) you’ll be expected to hold safety at the highest level while operating our Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), have a strong attention to detail, outstanding communication practices both verbally and written, and embrace our values as a member of the Motional team. As a VO you’ll be working with new technologies in a fast paced environment being asked to adapt in our ever changing industry.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Safely operate prototype-level Autonomous Vehicles on both defined and undefined routes, including a variety of geographic and environmental conditions
  • Operate in-vehicle data recording computers, including start/stop recording, data marking and minor debugging when issues arise
  • Provide clear, accurate and useful subjective feedback to the engineering teams on vehicle behavior observed
  • Ensure the safe operation of our test vehicles on public roads
  • Be able to provide quality service for passengers when applicable
  • Able read and understand highway and street signs and all traffic signals
  • Able to speak sufficient English in order to speak with public safety officers if necessary
  • Maintains current knowledge and adherence to all Motional operating policies, procedures and directives
  • Arrives to work on time and with proper driving credentials on his/her person and is ready to work
  • Maintains current knowledge and is in compliance with Las Vegas traffic laws
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the Autonomous Vehicle.  This includes conducting an external/internal visual inspection of the vehicle and testing all necessary equipment, operating devices and controls
  • Properly care for assigned vehicle and all components as prescribed by the Company
  • As needed: Completes accident and incident reports
  • Control and manage emergency situations according to company procedures
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures
  • Able to work in a team environment and drive with another person.  Maintain cooperative behavior towards fellow team members, leads, supervisors, and managers
  • Familiar with ride-hailing practices and ability to successfully interact and engage with members of the public

What We're Looking For

  • Candidates must have and maintain a clean driving record for the previous 3 years and no DUIs for previous 10 years
  • Prior experience as an Operator/Driver for Autonomous Vehicles, including some type of internal or external training on
  • Autonomous Vehicle technology is preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • The position may require some travel
  • Experience and training on providing subjective feedback on vehicle behaviors and environment
  • Must be able to successfully complete in-house driving course/examination
  • Local knowledge in test city of streets, geography and environmental features that may be challenging for Autonomous Vehicles
  • Able to work days, nights and weekends
  • Must be able to use company communication systems and communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal
  • Must be able to read a map and possess knowledge of the Las Vegas area
  • Minimum of Ten (10) years of overall licensed driving experience

Bonus Points (not required)

  • Basic working-knowledge of Autonomous Vehicle technology
  • Experience with NHTSA Levels 2-5 Autonomous Vehicles preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Requires near/far/depth and color vision to safely operate Autonomous Vehicles and computer screens
  • Able to be in confined seated position to operate vehicle for up to four (4) hours at a time for a total of up to ten (10) hours per day
  • Able to be to be a driver and a passenger in an Autonomous Vehicle
  • Able to operate grip gear shift, brake release and steering wheel requiring coupling forces up to ten (10) lbs.
  • Reach to either left or right shoulder to pull seat belt across body
  • Walking around the vehicle at beginning and end of shift for inspection of vehicle.
  • Will also inspect underneath of vehicle for leaks or damage
  • Able to stay awake and alert on shift at all times
