Position Summary:

Responsible for the timely, courteous, and competent transportation of patients throughout the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Outpatient Center, primarily via wheelchair or stretcher. Receives assignments for specific trips and associated tasks from Supervisor and/or Customer Service Representatives. Delivers and retrieves transport equipment throughout the campus area, as directed. Participates in performance of maintenance and minor repair work on wheelchairs and stretchers. Accepts additional assignments related to support functions as is needed to provide service excellence to both internal and external customers.

Expectations of staff who are certified in Basic Life Support/CPR would be consistent with other non-clinical staff certified in Basic Life Support/CPR within organization: recognize patient in distress, call for help, and render CPR/Basic Life Support as appropriate until clinical team/providers arrive on scene. Staff would be expected only to provide care up to the level of training that they have received.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited high school or a G.E.D. Certificate

Required Work Experience:

Minimum of one to three months experience in a healthcare setting, especially in a role which interacts with patients, is preferred. Verifiable patient transport experience is extremely desirable.

Licensure/Certification:

Current basic cardiac life support (CPR) required. Certification as Healthcare Transporter preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

General knowledge of patient transport and age-specific interactions.

Ability to read and write information regarding trip assignments and to confirm patient's identification.

Customer service core competencies for ability to deal directly with patients, their families, and JHM customers.

Ability to read and comprehend policies and procedures.

Able to work independently.

Ability to interact positively with team members to carry out responsibilities and/or to take direction and assignments is critical.

Ability to determine status of patient transport equipment in order to insure that it is in safe working condition is critical.

Timely communication of appropriate information regarding delays, trip completions, etc. is essential to insure that productivity is enhanced.
