Summary:

The Senior Technologist will serve as Powin’s cell and module testing expert. Responsible for resolving technical problems encountered with the setup and execution of electrical or mechanical testing. Manage and own cell module testing plans, data analyses, and test regimes scripting.

Job Details:

  • Serve as Powin product group cell expert (life, degradation, chemistries, and operating parameters)
  • Support Test Manager with definition of testing needs: Test requirements and algorithms/protocols definitions
  • Define operating envelopes for cells and beyond
  • Guide testing, qualification, validation, and characterization
  • Guide selection and introduction of new tests/technology/equipment for test improvement

Building empirical life models and SOH prediction and product performance guarantees based on cycle and calendar life data:

  • Co-own: Life/SOH models, Review/Troubleshoot Life/SOH models from Analytics group
  • Co-own: analysis and publishing of reports based on results
  • Co-own: compare stack level performance to cell and module
  • Guide Scale up of predictions from Cell-to-module-Stack-system
  • Own Cell requirements definition matrix: create, define, maintain based on understanding of system needs and cell capabilities
  • Support/hold internal webinars on basic and advanced battery topics A/R
  • Scout for current and emerging battery technologies and maintain an updated database
  • Own definitions of Cell chemistry targets with future potential

Work with VP Battery Strategy:

  • To identify new vendors/new chemistries/new technologies to pursue
  • To assure cell quality, specifications, and MFR data are as required
  • Cell real-time SOH ranking, supplier cell life predictions and validation
  • Support battery questions (from sales, product, customers, and/or engineering) to explain battery fundamentals or provide performance figures) – some of this will be part of the internal landing page

Support translation of lab data and specs into warranties:

  • Analyze methods and effectiveness to optimize cell/stack performance over life
  • Work with Powin engineering to implement optimized designs and to design for new cells

Qualifications:

  • MS Chemical Engineering, Materials, Applied Science, Electrical Engineering, or related, or equivalent relevant experience
  • 5+ years directly relevant industry experience in battery development, test, modeling, and commercialization
  • 5+ (8-10 preferred) years product development and test, R&D, and/or NPI experience especially in batteries
  • Strong communication skills written and verbal
  • Travel up to 10% if not in Tualatin Area, some international travel possible
  • Assess, accept, and communicate reasonable risks: Extrapolate based on experience and knowledge from an incomplete dataset, support commercialization, and drive to deeper knowledge

Desired Skills:

  • Deep understanding of battery cells/electrochemistry cell modeling experience
  • Technical writing
  • Data Processing/coding skills (SQL, Python, Statistical analyses (e.g. Minitab or similar)
  • MSOffice, Confluence, JIRA 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment 
  • Ability to work with international vendors (Language other than English)
  • Hands on battery and cell testing/modeling experience strongly preferred (Cyclic Voltammetry, EIS, DCIR, SOC, SOH)
