Job Summary
Responsible for leading a team of Software Development Engineers in the planning and designing of software and web applications. Manages projects from design to testing, including new programs, enhancements and modifications. Collaborates with Quality Assurance team to conduct testing. Develops financial and operational objectives. Ensures operational plans are aligned with business objectives. Contributes to functional strategy development. Has a greater degree of impact on business results and typically manages one or more groups of professional employees.

The Technology, Product, Experience (TPX) organization works at the intersection of media and technology and our innovative teams are continually developing and delivering products and next-generation technologies that transform the customer experience. The Comcast Network and CONNECTivity (CONNECT) organization is a highly agile, fast-paced, dedicated group at the forefront of change focused on innovating, building, and operating the best in class, most reliable access network for our customers.

About the Team:

We are looking for an experienced technical manager with a strong software development background to take on both technical and leadership responsibilities on the Operations Technology (Optek) team. This is an inclusive group of software developers, SRE, QA, and field support staff who value collaboration, creative problem-solving and continued learning.

Optek's distributed team is responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of critical hardware and software applications used by 20,000+ field technicians to diagnose and repair customer-impacting issues within the Access Network. Optek also develops and maintains multiple RF monitoring software platforms. These tools provide near real-time analysis of Comcast's 50 million cable modems and associated network components, detect problems, and notify the correct fix agents. The technical manager joining our team will focus on the platform side of our software development team.

In addition to team management responsibilities, the person chosen for this role will also serve as a key member of the management team. As such, they will contribute to team strategy, identify and implement process improvements, and actively participate in leadership initiatives.

  • Lead a team of highly talented software engineers. Foster employee growth and serve as their advocate. Work with team members to ensure long-term career goals are being maintained and proactively managed.
  • Maintain team effectiveness. Recruit and retain top talent. Ensure employee skill sets expand to meet changing business priorities and shifts in industry best-practices. Eliminate roadblocks that prohibit individual progress. Carefully measure and monitor overall capacity to ensure the team is positioned to meet upcoming business needs. Maintain high team morale.
  • Technical Program Ownership. Accountable for team execution of assigned projects. Embrace and support agility. Provide guidance identifying product and technical requirements. Serve as liaison between development and other teams. Work with Project/Process Manager to implement best practices across the team. Collaborate with team leads and architects to set technical direction.
  • Contribute to Departmental Strategy. Collaborate with management peers to ensure the department can execute business needs in a rapidly changing environment. Keep abreast of industry trends and be passionate about continuously improving the department.
  • Communication. Ensure team members are aware of deadlines for requirements. Ensure transparency for project and program requirements, status, budgets, and deliverables to Optek and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Metrics. Provide team and project milestones to leadership. Track team's work through designated ticketing system. Develop and implement team, individual, and project performance metrics.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience managing software engineers in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and development of applications and large-scale distributed systems.
  • Development experience includes leveraging a CI/CD environment, using Git, creating and reviewing PR's and using release processes common to the Open-Source community.
  • Experience leading small engineering teams through multiple releases of projects.
  • Experience with a geographically distributed team.
  • Experience with Agile project management principles.
  • Demonstrable understanding of scalability implications in service design.
  • Excellent communication skills.



"Nice to Have" Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with Web Services and REST API Design & Development.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google).
  • Strong software testing skills.
  • Familiarity with Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience creating individual career, development, and training plans for individual contributors.
  • Previous experience working in the cable industry.

Compensation
Pay Range: $139,831.96-209,748

Comcast intends to offer the selected candidate base pay within this range, dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience.
