Senior Strategic Sourcing Specialist

How you'll make a difference?

Manages Supply Chain (SC) assigned projects including New Product Development and Introduction, Operations, and SC projects. This individual contributor leads development and execution of the SC project strategies, aligning with Orthofix global business strategies. The Senior Strategic Buyer has a high level of experience and functional expertise and is responsible for building strong, ethical supplier relationship, strategic sourcing, supplier selection, end of life product management, SC cost savings, and SC process improvements. This position is also responsible for evaluating the total supply base, monitoring supplier performance, identifying gaps/risks in the supply base and working with management to develop plans for:
  • Identification of new suppliers, qualification and implantation
  • Identifying opportunities for supplier development and coordinating or leading those activities
  • Exit strategies for underperforming, high risk suppliers.

Commodity responsibilities include raw materials, component parts, semi-finished products, services and finished goods.

  • Leadership and Accountability
  • Represents the SC within the project teams
  • Overall accountability for assigned SC project execution
  • Follows SC processes related to SC project management
  • Participates in Research and Development meetings, developing and implementing action plans to support requirements bringing new products expeditiously to market
  • Supports the development of project overall SC strategy and responsible for execution
  • Manages SC project responsibilities including strategic sourcing, acquisition of sample and prototype materials, launch planning, inventory strategy, packaging/logistics, supplier contracts, supplier material flow, material Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) and procurement of launch quantities.
  • Works cross-functionally with core team and functional managers to ensure that SC project deliverables meet objectives, budgets, and timelines.
  • Reviews purchase requisitions and confers with supplier to obtain product information such as price, availability and delivery schedule, reviewing quotes for accuracy and competitive strategies and makes awards.
  • Develops new supply sources where vendors and suppliers inadequate.
  • Plans and schedules deliveries to optimize inventories in support of product launches
  • Ensures purchases are made from the approved supplier base within the Orthofix Quality Management System.
  • Coordinates and Schedules Design for Manufacturing (DFM) meetings
  • Enters project related Supplier Deviation Requests (SDRs) directly into Agile upon receipt to monitor timely resolution
  • Provides SC guidance in clearing barriers to maintain effective and timely progress towards project completion.
  • Related to projects resolves incorrect invoices, shipping errors, cancellation of orders, replacements of materials not meeting company specifications, and engineering charges
  • Related to projects facilitates NCMRs and supplier corrective action and partners with SQE and suppliers to improve quality.
  • Reports team progress, project recommendations, and issue resolution to leadership.
  • Creates and maintains mutually beneficial long-term partnerships with suppliers to foster feedback and continuous improvement.
  • Performs as purchasing subject matter expert for internal and external customers due to extensive knowledge of purchasing and product line operations.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to junior members of the supply change and purchasing team.
  • Monitors supplier performance and leads buyers in taking action to maintain high levels of supplier performance.
  • Audits item specific purchasing attributes in Oracle Item Master files, and supplier specific data, planning parameters and constraints in Oracle Supplier Master files to ensure maintenance is effective
  • Maintains open communications with production planning to ensure proper execution of special purchases and set build plans.
  • Assures compliance internally and with suppliers concerning cGMP's, FDA regulations, Orthofix SOP's and all relevant regulatory, legal and safety compliance issues, including the requirement for notification and approval of any changes in process or raw materials.
  • Exercises judgment in planning and organizing work; monitoring performance and reports status.
  • Uses best business practices to ensure success in areas of responsibility.

  • Communicate with core team and leaderships to ensure that they understand the issues, recommendations, and plans on a timely basis, and as requested
  • Integrate leadership, functional managers, core team members and company experts' opinions and experiences into the development of SC plans
  • Clarify options and solution recommendations off-line to ensure effective leadership reviews and decision making

What skills and experience is required?
  • 10-12 years required with Purchasing or Supplier Management experience including forecasting, supply chain management and working with both internal and external partners.
  • Minimum 8 years' experience in a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Minimum 6 years' experience in medical device (ISO 13485) environment with understanding of GMP requirements.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of cross-functional Project Management experience
  • Minimum 1- 3 Experience in supply chain logistics
  • Competent in MRP/ERP systems
  • Knowledge of purchasing practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of an automated purchasing system
  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting process as it relates to purchasing
  • Strong Customer Service Orientation and Communication Skills required
  • Educational training and experience in continuous improvement and lean concepts
  • Advanced personal computer skills including Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, database management, and other related project management applications
  • Mathematical Skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide; compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
  • Strong problem solving / negotiation skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy
  • A relatively deep understanding of each functional area
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and productively with others
  • Proven multi-tasking skills and ability to meet multiple project timelines in an organized manner
  • Open communication with team, functional management, and leadership members

What skills and experience would be helpful?
  • Undergraduate degree in business, supply chain, engineering, or related education (highly preferred)
