Job Summary:
The Markel Risk & Capital Team is responsible for implementing an effective Enterprise Risk Management ("ERM") strategy and framework that is responsive to the organization's risk profile, business strategies, material risk exposures and risk tolerance thresholds. The Risk & Capital Team, reports up to Markel's Chief Risk Officer, and to the Risk Management Committee ("RMC"). RMC is comprised of Executive Management and chaired by the Chief Financial Officer. ERM activities cover the entirety of Markel Corporation, although there is more of a day to day focus on traditional insurance operations. The risk & Capital team also report into other Committees and Boards and partners closely with business unit risk management teams.

The Risk Management Lead role requires the ability to absorb and analyze information, liaise with stakeholders of all levels within the organization and propose strategies and solutions to monitor, manage and mitigate risk, focusing not just on managing downside risk but also optimizing risk adjusted returns. Strong influential, interpersonal and presentational skills are essential, as well as an ability to absorb and address complex issues quickly. Many of the areas of work are confidential and therefore a high level of integrity and sensitivity are required. Inquisitiveness about the business and risk topics is necessary as well as continued ability to step outside the comfort zone.

The role could be based in any Markel office location. Some flexibility regarding attending video meetings in different time zones may be required. Some occasional business travel may be necessary.

Job responsibilities

  • Manage the regular process for assessment, analysis and reporting of various areas of Risk across the Corporation - including timely delivery from stakeholders, and verify information provided
  • Identify potential risk management "gaps" and propose process and reporting enhancements. Actively take the initiative to enhance efficacy and efficiency of the team
  • Manage stakeholder relationships on a day-to-day basis. Advocate for the function and promote awareness across the organization. Viewed as a "go-to" subject matter expert for designated risks
  • Support the timely production of Quarterly Risk Management Committee materials
  • Lead various projects to analyse areas of risk and propose practical, pragmatic and cost effective solutions
  • Oversee work by members of the team on certain specific activities, being comfortable with remote oversight of team members on these specific activities and providing guidance, instruction, mentoring and leadership, with appropriate performance management feedback.
  • Support regulatory and rating agency ERM related requirements, as appropriate.
  • Support raising the profile of the function across the Company through presentations and production of materials
  • Other tasks, as required


Education

  • Degree level in a finance, business, or other analytical discipline desired but not essential


Certification

  • Insurance, Risk Management, Accounting, or another professional qualification (or progress towards qualification) preferred but not essential


Work experience

  • Experience of working collaboratively with various functions to "make things happen" and influencing stakeholders where appropriate
  • Experience and knowledge of Operational Risk Management desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge of basic concepts behind insurance, accounting or actuarial concepts desirable but not essential
  • Understanding of the key features of insurance contracts beneficial.
