This position helps drive and enable the engagement efforts of Duke Energy with a specific focus on our regulated renewable solar, storage and wind projects in our Carolinas regulated footprint. This role is part of a team that works in partnership with our project development team, state president teams, external affairs and communications, legal and others, to develop and implement stakeholder engagement strategies and plans for a portfolio of renewable projects in our North and South Carolina footprint of Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress.

As renewable energy is an essential part of our ability to realize our carbon goals, intentional and thoughtful engagement with stakeholders early in the process will be important to continue to position the company as a leader in advancing clean energy for the benefit of our customers and communities.

This is an external-facing position that requires regular coordination with the project development team and community relations managers to develop and drive a well-defined plan for engaging with local, regional, and state stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes that support our business objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops integrated stakeholder engagement plans for regulated renewable projects with a focus on large-scale solar and future potential wind and battery storage projects. Ensures that external affairs risks and local considerations are identified. Strategically works alongside project development team and engages community relations managers to help advise and receive counsel on engagement approach, timing, and overall positioning with respect to a variety of factors including key project milestones that support our business objectives, other Duke Energy projects or initiatives impacting the area where the project is planned, environmental justice considerations (as applicable) and overall reputation of the company in that area.
  • Works with the community relations managers and project development team to refine the list of key external stakeholders who are impacted, and/or interested in the project, and ensures coordination around timing and approach for outreach. Coordinates to provide necessary internal updates with a focus on the stakeholder/external affairs considerations particularly.
  • As part of the integrated plan, develops a series of outreach tools, tactics, and materials to enable the successful execution of the engagement with stakeholders regarding projects. This includes but is not limited to the following: project collateral, web pages, videos, planning and participating in open houses, ribbon cutting ceremonies and other events that serve to engage and educate stakeholders.
  • Coordinates regularly with corporate communications on developing key messages, news releases, and other activities that could generate media inquiries or attention. Ensure corporate communications is engaged early in the process to help connect to broader activities happening in the state or region.
  • As needed, represents the company in key external events, delivers presentations and helps educate on the broader benefits of renewable energy.
  • Follows key industry trends affecting the renewable market as well as local trends, community developments, and permitting activities of third party developed projects that may impact the company's efforts.



Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years work related experience OR, in lieu of degree, HS/GED and 11 plus years of work related experience

  • Experience managing stakeholder engagement/communications for projects
  • Experience in building a trusted advisor relationship with senior management
  • Demonstrated organization, planning and independent decision making and planning skills
  • Demonstrated communications skills
  • Demonstrated contract negotiation experience, reporting expertise, proficient in MS Office
  • Experience with community involvement responsibilities
  • Experience with developing, implementing and monitoring strategy
  • Ability to lead cross functional teams
  • Demonstrated problem solving and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated financial and project management skills
  • Ability to balance corporate governance with local business needs
  • Ability to effectively navigate internal and external relationships to achieve business objectives and maintain relationships
  • Ability to work effectively with long distance management
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees, management, customers, vendors and service providers in both business and social settings
  • Ability to work frequent nights and weekends
  • Experience in working in a matrixed organization
  • Financial and strategic acumen, competence and experience
  • Contract development and management experience



Working Conditions

  • Requires travel to project sites - some nights and weekends
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Frequent driving



Location: Preferably in any of Duke Energy's Carolinas offices - Raleigh, Charlotte, Greenville, Columbia but will provide relocation service for candidates in other locations.
