Based in Houston, Pharmacy Refill Specialists work in collaboration with medical providers and their care team to provide the highest quality of care delivery, by ensuring all medication requests are answered and processed promptly and accordingly based on the practice’s guidelines.

How you can make a difference

  • Answer incoming phone calls in a call center environment regarding prescription refills and utilizing call auxiliary statuses to indicate availability to answer calls.
  • Process prescription refill requests in real time from incoming calls, and electronic prescription refill faxes from pharmacies within Athena EMR.
  • Rotation schedule for on and off phone work; Specialists will rotate working pharmacy electronic fax requests (off phone work), and incoming calls for Rx refill requests (on phone work).
  • Work in collaboration with providers and their care team to provide the highest quality of care delivery by ensuring all medication requests are answered and processed promptly and accordingly based on the practice’s guidelines.
  • Provide support to the clinician staff by reviewing all refill requests that come into the clinic refill inboxes and ensure that the medication protocols have been met in accordance with set protocols (it is expected that all clinical Rx refill boxes will be as close to empty as possible by the end of business each day)
  • Send courtesy refills when appropriate and send Return to Office requests when appointments are advised and/or labs are needed.
  • Coordinate patient care information related to medication refills with other health care providers and teams.
  • Attend staff meetings and providing input into evaluation of processes and suggestions for improvement.

Skills for success

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (some nights and weekends) required
  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • 1+ years of Pharmacy Technician experience with current certificate/license (required)
  • 2+ years of Pharmacy Technician experience (preferred)
  • Some experience working in a Call Center, and/or handling high volumes of incoming calls (strongly preferred)
