The main purpose of this position is to continually develop transportation managers so that our transportation manager group is highly effective in the following: promoting a safety first culture, retaining our professional drivers, delivering elite service to our customers by delivering freight on-time, proactive communication to internal departments, reducing costs through various measures, including managing fuel performance within their fleet, and being responsible for promoting and guiding our transportation managers through technology changes. The Operations Manager also serves as an elevated outlet in supporting, guiding, and developing our professional drivers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The job functions listed below represent the essential job duties and responsibilities of the above-listed position.
  • Build your transportation manager team through providing continuous feedback and guidance on their performance in our key metrics: driver turnover, accidents per million-mile, driver time off, on-time service, truck availability, fuel performance, and overall knowledge of the trucking industry.
  • Keep your team engaged and motivated by conducting weekly meetings to discuss general updates & changes throughout the Van Network, Werner as an organization, and transportation industry. Keep your associates engaged and motivated by conducting routine bi-weekly touch point meetings to discuss overall performance and provide structured feedback and guidance so your associates will be successful.
  • Stay current and engaged in changes related to the Van Network, the organization, and the transportation industry. Utilize this knowledge to continuously improve the management of drivers and educating your team so they fully understand the changes coming or that have been implemented.
  • Provide continuous feedback on our internal processes and how we can improve as a department and organization.
  • Meet or exceed quarterly goals related to driver retention, accidents per million, service, and operating ratio of your assigned group.
  • Work closely with marketing, maintenance, fleet assignments, and safety to ensure our internal processes work to benefit the driver and organization. The responsibility for proactive communication to marketing, maintenance, fleet assignments, and completing safety needs in a timely manner falls on the Operation Manager.
  • Identify and analyze metrics that need improvement and take action to improve those measures through process design & developing your transportation team, which will include implementing and ensuring changes takes place within your transportation manager group.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  • Timely and regular attendance according to the scheduled shift as determined by supervisory personnel.

  • Can do attitude and a willingness to accept ownership of your fleet and drive operational improvements to better improve the following: safety metrics, service to our customers, and improve our overall driver experience.
  • Knowledge of the transportation industry which is usually gained through practical experience and on-the-job training.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Products to better communicate changes, process improvement ideas, and make sense of data. Have initiative to act on insights gained from data to ensure change is taking place.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task. A passion for driving improvements and developing a team.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner when talking with drivers, customers, marketing department employees, and other support staff.
  • Knowledge of the United States, Canadian, and Mexican geography.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration

with an emphasis in Management or Transportation/Logistics or equivalent experience.

Three to five years dispatch experience, preferably in the truckload segment of the industry.

One to two years AS400 and P.C. experience preferred.

Six months to one year supervisory experience preferred.

Zero to one year multi-line phone experience preferred.
