This Open Source Community Advocate is responsible for building an engaged community of open source contributors within and outside of UHG. Developer advocates represent the voice of the user (e.g., developer, data scientist, engineer). Community Advocates are a strong voice for the Open Source Program Office within and outside our organization.
Community Advocates raise awareness among developers about open-source projects hosted by UHG and contributed to by UHG. They educate users and help them get the most out of the platform. They build strong relationships with users across open source and developer communities. They advocate for users internally with the project team by sharing community feedback and challenge. They organize community building events (e.g., meetups) and industry events like conferences and hackathons.
A primary requirement for this role is active and enthusiastic participation in open source development. Our open source community is a group of dedicated developers and engineers working toward positive disruption in the healthcare and technology industries. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define best practices and standards for creating and managing source code for developers, engineers, scientists and clinicians, including GitHub templates
  • Defining processes and procedures to increase reuse of code throughout the enterprise
  • Socialize open source projects as an advocate for adoption and reuse across the enterprise
  • Generate clear materials to encourage participation in the open source community including websites, guides, and internal/external presentations
  • Organize and facilitate community management vehicles (such as meetings, conferences, etc.)
  • Oversee and facilitate programs that encourage elevate branding and participation of open source for the enterprise
  • Develop and maintain objective measures of open source health across enterprise efforts including adoption, production, and project quality

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Communication, Technology, Computer Science, or 3 or 4 years of related field/work experience
  • Demonstrated process improvement experience
  • Technical Writer 1 to 2 years of experience
  • Experience documenting and improving technology processes
  • Documented clear communication skills
  • Ability to tailor messages to the audience
  • Experience building and engaging communities
  • Experienced celebrating victories and encouraging others to do so
  • Experience crafting recognition plans and incentive plans for communities
  • Experience organizing and facilitating meetings
  • Experience managing large-scale projects
  • Experience leading others to adopt change


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management Certification
  • Published writing record
  • Documented Github contributions
  • Experience contributing to open source
  • Experience working with or for non-profit organizations
  • Established social media presence/influencer
  • Established blog contributions

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $79,700 to $142,600. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $87,900 to $156,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
