Manager, IT Infrastructure - IOC Group Manager

Job Summary :

This position will provide vision, direction, leadership, and management for a team which is responsible for activities related to the operation and integrity of Southern Company's Technology infrastructure. Activities include, but not limited to, providing 24x7 monitoring, triage, diagnosis, resolution and if necessary, communication and coordination with second-level support teams, third-level engineering teams, dispatch functions to field support and the management of escalation processes for the Technology Organization for incident management. In addition, this position serves as the backup to the Director, Infrastructure Operations in the Infrastructure Storm Lead role overseeing preparation, assessment, and restoration activities across infrastructure services before, during and after a storm, and the role is responsible for ensuring storm related activities conducted by infrastructure services are coordinated across the technology organization, Southern Linc, power delivery functions within the electric affiliates, and technology business partners to ensure TO meets the storm support needs of all the affiliates.

Specifically, this position is responsible for leading the organization responsible for monitoring and operational support of the Technology Organization's infrastructure across the enterprise, including but not limited to, mainframe, enterprise storage, open systems (Windows, UNIX & Linux), virtualization infrastructure, platform support and infrastructure integration, production application engineering and support, database systems, cloud technologies, data network technologies (data, voice and wireless networks, and firewalls) and the telecom and transport technologies (digital microwave, fiber optics, data communication equipment, ancillary systems, DACs, SCADA systems, remotely polled RTU devices and MAS radios). In addition, this position reports to the Director, Infrastructure Operations and is a leader of leader's role with Two supervisors and five additional direct reports, with an overall organization of over forty employees, reporting across various geographic locations within the Southern Company Services territory.

This position has a hybrid remote-work environment with a negotiable office report-to location. However, this position must live and work within the Southern Company Services territory.

Job Requirements :

  • B.S., B.A., or B.B.A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, Business, or another related field, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including building a strong, results-oriented team, performance management, and budget management with a proven track record of achieving measurable business results working with and through others.
  • Acts as a student of the business and technology, anticipating futures needs and directional shifts in both technology and energy industries which could impact operational performance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Southern Company's business model or equivalent external experience which is transferrable.
  • Comprehensive communication skills with the ability to articulate the Technology Organization's strategies and projects to employees and to all levels of management, including executives.
  • Extensive knowledge of technology infrastructure components, along with implementation and support activities driven both centrally and through a distributed workforce. Knowledge of ITIL practices is desired.
  • Proven analytical skills, problem solving skills, and project management skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of budgeting processes.

Major Responsibilities:

People:

  • Responsible for attracting, developing, retaining, and managing a diverse group of leaders and highly technical employees with an emphasis on appropriately developing their direct reports to maximize performance, facilitate learning experiences, and to prepare employees for future opportunities. In addition to performance management of team, strategic workforce planning, and resource allocation is critical to success. Finally, managerial direction/support to peer teams within the Infrastructure Operations Center is a fundamental responsibility.
  • Maintains technical expertise to drive the development of work processes and associated training curriculum for employees.
  • Responsible for modeling behaviors which not only support Southern Company's efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, but also facilitates open dialogue with their employees to ensure barriers and unconscious bias are recognized, managed, and addressed within our culture.

Strategy:

  • Establishes the strategic direction for monitoring, operating, and supporting Southern Company's technology infrastructure enabling the business to meet its strategic and operational objectives.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive operating roadmap which transforms business operations and facilitates competitive advantage and margin for the Technology Organization.
  • Drives and manages continuous improvement of technology infrastructure operations and services, including delivery, maintenance, production support and reliability.
  • Serves on the Infrastructure Operations management team and represents broad operational requirements for their prescribed technical discipline. To ensure they are effective, they must establish and maintain strong partnerships/working relationships with the centralized engineering areas of Infrastructure Services and other functions across the Technology Organization in addition to business partners, external vendors, and suppliers.
  • Participates with various Southern Company management teams as well as the Technology Organization's management teams to facilitate operational and organizational effectiveness, including front-line response to storm readiness and restoration activities, as well as backup to the Infrastructure Storm Lead.
  • Applies strong leadership and strategic thinking to a diverse set of opportunities and challenges, serving as a true strategic partner and business enabler. Establishes themselves as a thought leader and integral part of the Technology Organization's leadership team.
  • Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships and partnerships with leadership throughout the enterprise, industry peers and groups, external vendors, and suppliers.
  • Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships and partnerships with revenue share vendors and center to center partners under Southern Company service agreements - servicing them as true customers.
  • Establishes strategic plans for batch technology solutions - product ownership, production implementation and maintenance support.
  • Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships, partnership and seamless processes with the Technology Organization's Security Operations Center, Southern Linc's Mobile Switching Office, and the Company's various electric and gas Control Centers.

Operational:

  • Drives innovation and leverages technology to create value.
  • Delivers operational solutions that are common where possible and custom where it counts.
  • Enforces appropriate IT policies, best practices, processes, systems and technology portfolio and lifecycle management, and program and project management.
  • Continuously monitors and evaluates the operating model and supporting organizational design to identify efficiencies and synergies and ensure efficient resource allocation.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, audits, and change management controls. Included in this responsibility are disaster recovery and business continuity plans being developed and tested within their area of support.
  • Develops and manages the O&M and Capital budgets for their function and provides variance explanations with an understandable explanation of total costs. Establishes cost allocation methodologies for their function.
