Salary Range

$153,900 - $261,500
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a technical manager (Manager, R&D Science and Engineering) for the Cyber Enterprise Security & Initiatives Department, 8749. The department is located in Sandia/CA within the Reliability & Digital Assurance group, and is also part of Sandia's Cyber Security Program, one of the nation's premier cyber security teams, dedicated to the defense, protection, and assurance of the enterprise networks underlying the labs' many national security missions. We are seeking a hardworking leader and sub-program manager to join our highly collaborative team. The manager will be responsible for computer and cyber security research and operations, with research conducted in all areas of cyber defense, vulnerability assessment, intrusion detection, forensics, malware analysis, and reverse engineering. This will include management of the line organization, including responsibility for establishing and maintaining an outstanding career environment for recruiting and retention. The individual selected will partner closely with other departments in the Reliability & Digital Assurance group, Cyber Security Program, Information Technology Services, CA Information System group, Counterintelligence, and other cyber organizations across both sites.
You will use your knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations. In collaboration with Cyber Security Program management, you may support interactions with NNSA, internal customers, and other stakeholders, and provide or coordinate cyber security expertise for these interactions. Leadership of these interactions and of external technical collaborations may require travel to meet with customers, collaborators, and other stakeholders.
With department capabilities and infrastructure primarily in Livermore, this management posting is preferred to be based locally, but also could be considered if based at Sandia in New Mexico. If based in Livermore, the manager can anticipate regular travel to Sandia/NM to develop strong collaborations with NM-based Cyber Security Program managers and staff. If based in Albuquerque, the manager would be co-located with the NM cyber team, and will be expected to travel regularly to the CA site to connect with department staff, partnering CA organizations, and provide management assurance for CA enterprise security labs and equipment.
On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Understand the threat landscape.
  • Establish a vision and strategy for addressing the evolving threat.
  • Lead execution of that vision/strategy for Incident Response, Cyber Threat Intelligence, Adversarial Modeling and Penetration Testing (Red Team), Vulnerability Assessment, Security Validation and Automation, Computer and Network Forensics, and Counterintelligence technical support.
  • Establish an exceptionally positive relationship within the Cyber Security Program and with IT organizations to ensure robust visibility into network environments both on premises and in the cloud.
  • Partner with other NNSA and DOE sites in support of threat response and forensics.
  • Engage technically with department staff and collaborating organizations to understand and represent the work.
  • Oversee, manage, and mentor members of the workforce within the department
  • Coordinate employee recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition and disciplinary actions
  • Ensure that customer needs are satisfied by managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements
  • Outstanding performance in this role will require engagement of cyber and mission teams across the group and Sandia more generally, as well as partnership with peer NNSA sites.



Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or closely related field plus eight years relevant technical experience -OR- Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or closely related field, plus 4 years experience
  • Seven or more years of related technical experience
  • Strong record of technical leadership and impact
  • Experience collaborating with a variety of customers/stakeholders within or outside of Sandia
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Level clearance and SCI clearance

  • Experience with Adversarial Modeling and Red Teaming
  • Experience with Security Validation and Automation
  • Familiarity with Sandia's IT infrastructure and services.
  • Familiarity with Sandia's R&D enterprise and S&E environment and capabilities
  • Willingness and ability to travel in support of program development, management, and execution needs



About Our Team

The Cyber Enterprise Security & Initiatives department resides within the Reliability & Digital Assurance group at Sandia/California, and is a matrixed element of Sandia National Laboratories' Cyber Security Program. This team is responsible for Sandia California's network security operations, as well as partnering with NM-based cyber security teams to support the breadth of Sandia's network security operations on classified and unclassified networks. The team is responsible for maintenance and continuous improvements to Sandia's network security architecture, and performs information & cyber security research to develop and apply state-of-the-art cyber technologies. The department performs research in all areas of cyber defense, vulnerability analyses of networks and networked systems, vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection, incident response, computer and network forensics, counterintelligence technical support, and consulting services to other organizations with information security concerns. The team partners with various organizations across the laboratories and external stakeholders to ensure the protection of Sandia's information and assets.

Security Clearance
