The Machine Test/Development Engineer will work with the design teams and validation engineers for various Caterpillar, Building Construction Products (BCP) Division’s product groups including Backhoe Loader (BHL), Mini Hydraulic Excavator (MHE), Small Wheel Loaders (SWL), Small Track Type Tractors (STTT) and Work Tool Attachments (WT) on both New Product Introduction (NPI) and Current Product Improvement (CPI) projects, primarily at our Clayton Machine Development Center (CMDC), in Clayton, NC.

The Machine Test/Development Engineer’s goal is to provide high quality on machine Test & Development services to our internal BCP design groups to validate that our machines meet design and performance requirements and are of the highest quality and reliability for our customers. These services start with up front test planning and preparation, followed by safe, efficient, and consistent test execution, and end with documentation and communication of test results in the form of analyzed data and usable conclusions and recommendations. 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:  

  • Perform pre-test planning with design and validation engineers to discuss concerns and/or problems being investigated and establish clear test objectives
  • Create a test plan with the schedule, instrumentation & data collection, and machine operations needed to meet those objectives
  • Review and apply standard test procedures where appropriate. Innovate and document new testing methods as warranted
  • Collaborate with test support staff including instrumentation and machine technicians, and expert machine operators to prepare machines and test sites / equipment for the tests, at times assisting with the completion of these tasks
  • Lead execution of machine test & development activities safely, on schedule, and on budget
  • Review and analyze test data utilizing various software including Data Analysis Toolkit (DATK) and MS Office
  • Develop and document clear conclusions and recommendations as well as any failures or issues found during the testing and communicate those results to the product groups.
  • Archive all testing information and documentation and share any lessons learned with the rest of the test & development team

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering field
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience performing test / product development on machines or systems   
  • Mechanical aptitude and a desire to be hands-on with machines, spending 40-60% of time in the shop and outside in the test fields 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in problem solving, troubleshooting, teamwork, organization, and communication
  • Effectively prioritize, manage time, and work autonomously
  • Demonstrate sense of urgency and goes above and beyond when needed   
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Teams, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)

Top candidates will also have:

  • Experience with BHL, MHE, STTT, SWL, WT or other construction equipment and/or Engine, Hydraulic, Powertrain, Electrical, and/or machine Software & Control systems.
  • Construction Equipment operating experience
  • Ability to read engineering schematics
  • Design experience
