Responsibilities

As an Innovation Strategy Director, you'll focus on continuing to build an innovation ecosystem within Principal while understanding the strategic priorities of our diverse businesses to source potential engagements with emerging companies and entrepreneurs that serve those priorities. The focus expands to working with industry partners such as venture capital programs, global InsureTech, FinTech, and InvestTech accelerators, and with universities to collaborate on solutions.

You'll have the opportunity to:
  • Coordinate with a curated team of innovators within Principal to drive best-practices, vet innovations early and, when successful, use an agile approach to integrate potential solutions.
  • Champion communication (both internally and externally) regarding innovation efforts.
  • Lead managing and decision making for external partnerships that impact the entire organization.
  • Maximize partnerships (i.e., startup ecosystem, venture capital programs, accelerators, etc.) and ensure they are providing value to the organization and innovation capability.
  • Provide leadership and development for Principal's internal innovation ecosystem, including the Venture Studio and the broader innovation community with the company.
  • Assess external partnerships and recommend necessary changes to the portfolio.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 10+ years relevant work experience required.
  • MBA preferred
  • In-depth understanding of products, services, and operations within the financial services industry.
  • Experience working with accelerators and/or venture firms strongly preferred.
  • Experience in or exposure to startup funding ecosystems and InsureTech and FinTech companies preferred.
  • Strategic and long-range visionary thinking with the ability to work independently.
  • Self-starter comfortable with defining scope of projects and work with limited oversight with strong sense of accountability
  • Strong written and verbal communication, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to influence, partner and facilitate discussion with executive leadership.
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and implement innovations related to market trends and strategic beliefs
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to operate in an unstructured and ambiguous environment
  • Creative in adapting to changes in direction and be able to move around barriers.
  • May include travel, up to 20% of the time, including overnight stays.


Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range

$127000 - $210000 / year

Job Level

Willing to consider at the AVP level based on experience and skillset.

Work Environment

This role offers the ability for in-office or hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek) work arrangements from our Des Moines, IA office location.
