Job Description

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Assists garden manager with all aspects of Merit Garden, including community garden, plant sales, classes, cut flowers, U-Pick garden, cafeteria food production and general garden upkeep.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED

  1. Communicates regularly with participating gardeners to answer questions, complete garden tasks and coordinate volunteer opportunities.
  2. Assists with the annual planning and design of all garden areas, particularly cut flowers.
  3. Provides care and maintenance for garden common areas, vegetable patch , pathways, berms and pergolas.
  4. Assists with greenhouse planning, production, monitoring, and sales
  5. Assists with education for participants related to organic gardening principles, cooking and more.
  6. Design and assist with the distribution of essential garden materials, such as newsletters, signage, catalogs, and advertisements.
  7. Responsible for monthly presentation for Merit's New Hire Orientation.
  8. Assist with the management of essential record keeping, inventory and survey data.
  9. Weekly management of social media platforms and communication with company marketing team.
  10. Continuous assistance with the harvesting, weighing and delivery of commercial produce for the cafeteria and U-Pick gardens.
  11. Assists with the distribution of surplus produce to employees and greater community.
  12. Assists in deliveries for inedible produce in accordance with Merit Garden zero food waste policy.
  13. Responsible for greenhouse monitoring throughout the year as needed.
  14. Assists with the production, arrangement and distribution of Merit's cut flower program.
  15. Creates a pleasant environment that is safe and secure for both the other gardeners and visitors.
  16. Assists with monitoring garden pests, weed problems and irrigation systems.
  17. Provides necessary feedback and follow up to ensure participants' garden boxes are tidy and well maintained.
  18. Performs miscellaneous duties as required or directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education equivalent to a High School diploma and two years of related experience.
  • Ability to follow through on details and complete tasks with a minimum amount of direct supervision.
  • Good written/verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Comfortable with working in all weathers and seasons.
  • Demonstrated computer skills preferably spreadsheets, word processing, database and other applicable software programs.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record to use company vehicle.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of organic/sustainable gardening methods and/or a desire to learn more.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, such as weekends.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel and Publisher.
  • Spanish verbal communication skills.
