TheGrio is strongly building its editorial staff. It is an investment in the business's core competencies. These jobs will primarily be based in NY and Atlanta. Some of the positions will be opportunities to work from other cities or be fully remote. JOB OVERVIEW

TheGrio is looking to hire an exceptional Events Director to build and drive our burgeoning event schedule with annual festivals, award shows, live audience based election coverage and monthly large-scale virtual, hybrid and in-person events. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, execution, and optimization of all event logistics, vendor relations, and project management related to our events and to ensure the best ROI from our event investments. You should have a successful track record in senior event management roles and be highly experienced in working with cross-platform teams to help design, implement and measure the effectiveness of our event strategy and driving pipeline creation and opportunity acceleration across our sales teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing, designing, and implementing our event strategy to help increase audiences, ROI, and customer engagement from marquee events.
  • Oversees all aspects of coordinating and executing events whether virtual, hybrid or in-person.
  • Setting the goals and success metrics for each event to maximize revenue and cultural relevance, and continuously improve and refine event strategies based on measurable results.
  • Monitoring and owning the progress of the planning and execution of event requirements with the highest quality and quantitative standards.
  • Possessing an already strong network of vendors to call upon to help deliver highly customizable event experiences and stand out amongst other competitors and manage the integration of events with external partners.
  • Creates and supervises run of events.
  • Establishes measures of success and monitors growth performance.
  • Reviewing and approving contracts, along with Legal.
  • Setting and monitoring budgets by closely working with Finance to ensure that all associated event costs are billed and recognized correctly and aligned to our own legal terms and conditions.
  • Implementing event processes, standards and measurements across all events.
  • Collaborating with Editorial, Creative Design, Marketing, PR, and Ad Sales teams to ensure successful deployment.
  • Leading the development and creation of unique event experiences that communicate our key messages, including editorial planning, guest bookings, audience invites, event production, audio-video requirements, etc.
  • Infusing events with out-of-the-box ideas and original customizations, including event apps, digital interactives, charitable partnerships, HBCU student engagement, etc.
  • Maintaining event standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervision of the complete production process to make sure staff and event personnel optimize successful audience experience to build the brand and create return attendees.
  • Establishing a culture of teamwork, regular feedback and growth mindset.
  • Creating mitigations for risk by identifying them early and reporting them.
  • Maintaining and enforcing standards and practices guidelines.
  • Proactively supporting a healthy newsroom culture with high performance and quality commitments.



Education/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience at executing successful virtual, hybrid and in-person events.
  • A minimum of 10 years work experience in event management/planning of which at least 3 have been at Director level or above.
  • You have a deep interest and knowledge of Black culture, personalities, and practices to amplify events which will be most relevant, informative, empowering, entertaining, and appealing to this audience.
  • You are metric-driven and have the ability to draw insight from complex marketing/event data.
  • Confident with a dynamic personality with a presence to build trust and report with the executive team and great interpersonal abilities to work and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Must have good organizational, analytical, and coordinating abilities.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and deadlines while managing multiple events at various stages of production.
  • The ability to multi-task & work flexibly under tight deadlines.
  • Experience integrating events into digital marketing campaigns.
  • Extensive experience with off-line revenue models for events, festivals, and concerts.
  • Understands the role that events play within the integrated marketing communications framework and works to ensure that the right type of events are being planned at the right time.
  • Ability to work successfully and efficiently with minimal supervision, yet seeks and takes direction appropriately.
  • High energy, problem solving, self-starter, results oriented, proactive individual with a high sense of urgency.
  • Ability to effectively lead and influence internal/external partners towards intended and successful results.
  • Passionate about amplifying the news and culture of Black people.
