Job Description Summary

As a Specialist, you'll play a role in ensuring a clear understanding of the risks that we take in our business and in proactively handling these risks to ensure we meet our growth, capital, and return business objectives. You'll have an opportunity to weigh in on risk management solutions that affect businesses and operations to appropriately balance risk and reward for achievement of our mission, vision and strategic goals.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports and collaborates with business partners on Nationwide's risk taking philosophies, processes and practices. Builds strong data governance practices.
  • Aids in analysis and measurement of enterprise risks. Assists in stress testing, scenario analysis and other techniques to understand potential impacts to the modeled results.
  • Learns to link risk management to business unit goals while enhancing risk diversification, protecting capital strength and supporting the achievement of risk-adjusted target returns.
  • Assists with initiatives associated with the identification, assessment, prioritization, and reporting of financial, operational, and strategic risks to Nationwide.
  • Conducts research and analysis of enterprise risk management (ERM) findings/issues and recommends appropriate solutions to business partners.
  • Assists with maintaining governance, risk and controls software applications.
  • Creates and maintains department training and communication initiatives. Develops intranet site content, presentations, newsletters. May facilitate training or attend conferences.


May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Risk/Actuarial leader.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in finance, accounting, economics, statistics, mathematics or related subject area required.

License/Certification/Designation: None required. Progress toward CPA, CFA or similar preferred.

Experience: Typically, three or more years of related work experience in insurance and/or the financial services industry.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Basic analytical skills to build solutions for sophisticated risk management problems. Basic knowledge in risk management and the insurance industry. Proven understanding of development and implementation of ERM processes. Proficient written and verbal communication skills. Basic presentation skills. Some project management skills. Ability to analyze financial and statistical data and make recommendations.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

Job Conditions:

Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional travel. Non-standard or extended hours may be required based on project needs.
