  • Job Summary
    • Under moderate supervision, performs echocardiography studies, Holter scanning and exercise stress tests.Assists in the implementation of protocols and procedures.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • High school graduation or equivalent. Successful completion of an ultrasound or cardiovascular technology program including verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in echocardiography preferred.
    • Experience
      • 6 months of echocardiography practice experience and the performance of at least 100echocardiogram/ Doppler examinations preferred. Arrhythmia analysis experience preferred. No employment history required for graduates of an accredited ultrasound program.
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • Registry or registry-eligible in Cardiovascular Technology: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) ORRegistered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) OR Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) from Canadian Association of Registered Diagnostic Ultrasound Professionals (CARDUP). Registry must be obtained within 1 year of hiring or continued employment is not guaranteed. CPR Healthcare Provider certification. Maintenance of Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits meeting IAC-Echo accreditation standards
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • Good analytical, mathematical, organizational and problem-solving skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to recognize emergency medical situations. Basic computer skills.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Adheres to department and hospital Safety and Infection Control programs. Reports patient or associate safety events as per established protocol. Demonstrates compliance with Universal Precautions when appropriate. Cleans, disinfects and maintains cardiology equipment as per department protocol.
    • Completes all related clerical procedures. Ensures completeness and accuracy of required patient data prior to billing and interpretation. Accurately completes all departmental and MedStar Health billing requirements in a timely manner. Directs reports as requested or required. Maintains statistics as required. Assists in maintaining internal and external cardiology supply inventories.
    • Completes all related procedures prior to performance of the test. Assists with the planning and timely scheduling of all cardiology tests. Clarifies testing request in ambiguous situations. Communicates information about specific test(s) to the patient and family explaining procedure prior to testing.
    • Consistently performs hookup procedures for Holter monitors, cardiac event recorders and Zio Patch® units as per department protocol. Demonstrates accurate lead placement and calibration procedures as required by individual equipment. Consistently performs Holter monitor scanning analysis procedures and completes preparation of findings for physician interpretation.
    • Consistently performs stress echo procedures including echo imaging and Doppler as per department protocol. Accurately performs EKG and blood pressure determination during procedure following department protocols. Assists in monitoring patient condition and safety during procedure identifying and documenting cardiac abnormalities related to patient symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the interpreting/performing cardiologist of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
    • Consistently performs stress test procedures as per department protocol. Accurately performs EKG and blood pressure determination during procedure following department protocols. Assists in monitoring patient condition and safety during procedure identifying and documenting cardiac abnormalities related to patient symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the interpreting/ performing cardiologist or other LIP of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
    • Consistently performs technically competent EKG tracings with all required patient information displayed. Demonstrates accurate lead placement. Ensures all patient information is entered prior to performance of EKG. Ensures EKG is transmitted into the MUSE system via wireless connection, modem or disc as appropriate. Completes preparation of EKG tracing for physician review. Immediately notifies the interpreting cardiologist of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
    • Consistently performs transesophageal echocardiographic imaging and cardiac Doppler as per department protocol. Obtains and records optimal gray scale images. Obtains and records optimal color flow. Obtains and records optimal Doppler signals, measurements and calculations. During test procedures, identifies and documents cardiac abnormalities related to the patient's symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the interpreting cardiologist of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
    • Consistently performs transthoracic echocardiographic imaging and cardiac Doppler as per department protocol. Obtains and records optimal gray scale images. Obtains and records optimal color flow. Obtains and records optimal Doppler signals, measurements and calculations. During test procedures, identifies and documents cardiac abnormalities related to the patient's symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the interpreting cardiologist of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure.
    • Maintains established department and hospital goals, objectives, policies and procedures, quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations and standards. Maintains Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits to comply with IAC-Echo accreditation standards.
    • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement programs. Attends required peer review and quality improvement meetings.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
