Job Description

The responsibility of the Site Operations Lead is to enable cohesive site functioning and efficient execution of research at the our Research & Development Division discovery site, thereby contributing to our Company's Discovery pipeline. Together with the Lab Operations Manager, the incumbent will lead, execute, and enable operational activities by working collaboratively with the support groups at the local Discovery sites as well as working synergistically across the network with the other Site Operations Leads. Specific duties may include, but not limited to the following:
Enable cohesiveness and collaborative site functioning

  • Working with the chair of the Site Coordination Team (XCT), the Site Operations Lead will be the manager and an integral member of the team. This includes deriving agenda, facilitating decision making, bringing business analytics, and driving actions.
  • Collaborate with the appropriate groups to manage critical site business, such as setting site policy, guidelines, and governance.
  • Act as the liaison or coordinator for all cross functional/site support activities. Be the voice of our Research & Development Division to other site operations e.g. Facilities, EHS, Finance, HR, external partners
  • Space management- direct lab and office area assignment; manage or support moves, validate occupancy with real estate on a quarterly basis
  • Drive or enable site activities as needed, e.g. internal/external visitors, site town hall meeting, site science symposium, rewards and recognition ceremony, Employee Business Resource Groups activities, etc.
  • Enable efficient lab functioning
  • Implement or enable enterprise network programs when needed such as common lab equipment program, lab asset management, contractor management, Electronic Lab Notebook, instrument utilization program, modernization, Chemical Management Program, Lean Labs, etc.
  • Organize Lab infrastructure projects including lab design planning and execution in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Act as the voice of the lab to create business plans for changes to space (lab configuration, etc.) in line with site leadership
  • Solve operational issues or improve workflows that hinder research and compliance. Act as a resource and liaison between scientists and support groups to provide connectivity and represent the needs of the laboratory. Examples of support groups are Facility, Laboratory Services, IT, Procurement, Lab Asset Management Program (LAMP) provider, Sourcing Operations, Finance, Environment Health and Safety, our Company's Maintenance & Repair.
  • Support Facilities and IT with laboratory downtime planning.
  • Represent the laboratory on various Safety and Facility committees, supporting safety inspections and action item follow up as needed


Provide oversight and guidance to the Lab Operations Manager who executes, on behalf of our Research & Development Division's scientists, non-scientific laboratory activities required to enable research, such as:

  • Facilitate all capital equipment lifecycle processes within our Company's financial and capital systems including onboarding, maintenance & repair, and disposition (relocation, scrap, donation)
  • Participate in the Management of Change process and facilitate/follow-up on project progress
  • Submit and follow-up on Facility work orders for laboratory modifications and coordinate facility downtime with Facility support in line with our Research & Development Division lab expectations
  • Manage consumable stockroom program for the site
  • Initiate and follow-up on equipment repairs as needed
  • Place ad hoc orders for the scientists/site or create Purchase Orders for research equipment/services as needed
  • Enable harmonized and synergized Discovery site operations across the network
  • Work collaboratively with the other Site Operations colleagues across the network to identify opportunities for efficiency and share best practices


Education Minimum Requirement:

  • BS in scientific discipline, e.g. biology, chemistry, biochemistry


Required Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of drug discovery and development process; minimum of 10 years of experience in a pharmaceutical/biotechnology/life sciences industry environment
  • High emotional intelligence; able to work with all stakeholders to problem solve, build consensus, and drive results
  • Highly customer-focused, highly responsive and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of discovery laboratory layouts and equipment requirements
  • Highly dedicated, motivated, resilient, and flexible, capable of problem-solving and delivering on
  • goals and objectives in a timely fashion in a scientific business model setting.
  • Strong project management skills; experience managing major projects crossing organizational boundaries; proven ability to effectively keep teams, projects, and assignments on track and raise issues in a timely fashion.
  • Highly organized and capable of working with attention to detail in a high paced environment; excellent data steward to maintain high-quality data
  • Ability to thrive in both working visibly as well as working behind the scene; exhibit a high degree of self-confidence to advice and collaboration with senior leaders
  • Excellent team player: able to work closely with fellow Ops Leads collaboratively and synergistically towards common portfolio and objectives
  • Able to work efficiently with colleagues across geographical areas via remote communication means, e.g. teleconference, video conference.
  • Ability to quickly gain an understanding of the scientific and operational issues being discussed and drive to an actionable outcome.
  • Ability to relate project details to larger divisional/corporate strategies to provide context to teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: able to establish good working relationships and collaborate with networks of employees of all levels and personalities; able to foster cooperation in others; creative problem-solver.
  • Excellent communicator: Knows when and how to speak up and appropriately raise issues to
  • appropriate stakeholders and to management; keeps both team members, colleagues (as
  • appropriate) and management fully apprised of project/initiative status and issues
  • Excellent meeting manager: able to derive meaningful agenda, facilitate an efficient meeting, and drive to impactful results
  • Demonstrated leadership and credibility, able to build trust with stakeholders.
  • Have a strong mindset in operational excellence, able to develop plans which translate strategic
  • objectives into executable actions and results and deliver on objectives.


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Master Degree/Ph.D. in Science and/or MBA desired
