As the Environmental Director, you will be responsible for driving environmental and dangerous goods compliance strategies and sustainability initiatives to achieve compliance with environmental laws, maintain and enhance our corporate reputation and ensure we are minimizing our impact on the environment. You will utilize your knowledge and years of experience in a broad scope of environmental areas, e.g. the Clean Water Act (CWA), HAZMAT storage, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and Clean Air Act (CAA) to lead and influence an environmental strategy throughout the organization and to promote the culture of concern for environmental excellence and responsibility.

What you'll do on a typical day:

  • Promote tactical and strategic continuous improvement efforts to achieve compliance and sustainability goals by analyzing data, tracking progress, identifying and prioritizing actions needed to achieve targets, gaining organizational support for initiatives and projects, and communicating progress to the broader organization
  • Lead sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy and actions to ensure GXO is changing with the pace of customer demand
  • Independently develop solutions and respond to complex evolving regulatory requirements by evaluating and integrating the requirements to proactively identify actions needed to address any potential risks or impacts on company operations
  • Communicate regularly with Operations, Legal, Facilities and Solutions on metrics, environmental risks of activities, potential or actual violations, audit results, action plan execution and risk mitigation
  • Provide insight on environmental governance, risk management and controls to reduce the risk of violations; liaise with external environmental regulatory agencies
  • Make environmental decisions on behalf of the organization to avoid violations, penalties and fines
  • Provides strategic leadership for developing and deploying environmental compliance and dangerous good policies, sustainability goals and electronic environmental management systems
  • Provide advanced and practical application on the use of digital tools and innovation as they relate to proactive environmental risk mitigation and sustainability performance
  • Develop, implement and manage key performance (KPIs) for the Environmental Department
  • Provide leadership for the tracking and reporting of environmental compliance metrics to closure
  • Assist with review and investigation of incident reports associated with environmental spills and compliance; compile findings and recommendations for corrective actions into summary report

What you need to succeed at GXO:

At a minimum, you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability or related field or equivalent related work or military experience
  • 7 years of progressively responsible experience implementing environmental compliance programs
  • 7 years of experience interpreting and applying state and federal environmental regulations, as well as other global environmental regulatory requirements
  • 5 years of experience in an environmental leadership role
  • Project management experience
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint

It'd be great if you also have:

  • Advanced degree in environmental field
  • 10 years of implementing environmental compliance programs
  • 15 years of experience managing environmental compliance, environmental management systems, or sustainability goals
  • Experience in Lean and ISO environments
  • Subject matter expertise of Clean Water Act (CWA), HAZMAT storage, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and Clean Air Act (CAA)
  • Ability to travel up to 40%
