Job Summary
The Aerospace Corporation has provided independent technical and scientific research, development, and advisory services to national security space programs since 1960. We operate a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) for the United States Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office and support all national security space programs. We also apply more than 50 years of experience with space systems to projects for civil agencies like NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, commercial companies, universities, and international organizations in the national interest.
Since our inception, our highly skilled technical staff have focused on ensuring the success of space missions and developing the most effective and economic space-related hardware and software in the world. Our greatest asset is the technical expertise of our people. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities are staffed by some of the leading scientists and engineers in the world.
The Model Based Systems Engineering Office (MBSEO) integrates corporate space system modeling capabilities to provide space systems engineering analysis, education, and support to space program decision makers and other stakeholders. To do this, the MBSEO operates 2 Concept Design Center (CDC) computer labs (1 unclassified and 1 classified SCIF) where engineering teams collaborate using integrated, but disparate, software tools that access cloud and/or local databases to exchange data. The CDC is an internationally recognized center of excellence in collaborative, concurrent design of space and ground systems that draws on technical experts from across Aerospace (see our CDC video at https://aerospace.org/video/concept-design-center). The Systems Administrator will assist in managing these labs.
What You'll Be Doing
Each of the two CDC computer labs have up to 20 PCs with different engineering software that engineers use to concurrently develop space system concept designs. As engineers perform the designs together, data is exchanged and shared through a database, enabling them to converge on design solutions quickly. The Computer Lab System Administrator manages all aspects of the computer lab facilities, computer hardware, software, database, AV equipment, and communication equipment (VTC and conference phones) for these lab users. The Sys Admin also coordinates with corporate Enterprise Information Services (EIS) to maintain lab network performance and information security. Specific duties include:
- Work with the technical team in EIS to provide comprehensive system administration for two computer labs and assist with managing the lab's file shared systems permission
- Manage all our lab's network hardware, including three virtual servers, network license server, network server, PostgreSQL database, and folder access control
- Manage access control for CDC's lab facilities (doors have keypad access)
- Oversee computer lab operational processes and procedures (e.g. VTC setup, lab scheduling, maintenance)
- Provide technical input for computer lab strategic planning and acquisition. We are building new facilities in other locations with similar characteristics to our current CDC labs.
- Coordinate with cloud service managers to investigate using corporate cloud services instead of local databases to manage data (labs are not currently configured this way)
- Provide Information Assurance (IA) oversight for unclassified and classified networks and host facilities to ensure IA compliance, and occasional project leadership for small to mid-sized projects
- Maintain client configuration control
- Install, configure, test and implement new systems or applications software
- Monitor and tune system and network resources to optimize application throughput and response time
- Maintain inventory for all computer lab equipment and software
- Those applying for Level IV will support additional computer labs
