Within the Enterprise Innovation team, the Business Innovation practice is responsible for innovation opportunity scanning, early-stage opportunity analysis, business model conceptualization and validation, partner identification and evaluation, and business due diligence. This is a remote position and can sit anywhere within the PNC footprint, except for Colorado, Hawaii or Alaska. There is limited expectation for regular in person, in office activities.
This position is part of PNC's Business Innovations organization. As a Business Innovation Associate, you will propose and explore new project opportunities in the Fintech market by matching unsolved business problems with emerging technologies and research IPs. In this role you will be responsible for identifying and validating innovation opportunities by connecting unsolved business problems and unmet customer needs to emerging technologies to secure new sources of revenue for PNC. You will also be responsible for evaluating business cases for early-stage opportunities. Additionally, you will conduct primary and secondary research with customers and thought leaders to develop proprietary insights. You will support the conceptualization of new business models including value proposition development, offering definition, partner identification and evaluation, pricing analysis, and go-to-market strategy development. And finally, you will be responsible for designing and facilitating scenario planning sessions, mapping ecosystem.
Due to the nature of the position, preferred candidates will possess the following:
• Previous work experience within most phases of a corporate innovation funnel (i.e., identifying and selecting ideas through conceptualizing and validating business models.)• Led teams in executing the analytical components of early-stage opportunity analyses or startup business assessments (e.g., market sizing, customer segmentation, channel analysis, financial modeling, pricing analysis, competitive landscaping, ecosystem mapping)• Firm grasp of the mechanics of financial statements, digital/fintech business models, and lean-start methods.• Able to successfully deploy a variety of innovation-related critical thinking tools and frameworks (e.g., hypothesis-driven problem solving, blue ocean canvas, jobs to be done, innovation engineering)• Proclivity for identifying and analyzing possible strategic pitfalls while still being optimistic and taking calculated risks to "push the envelope" when exploring innovation opportunities.• Expertise in both primary and secondary research methods, and able to teach others.• Energized by making fresh connections between different concepts and synthesizing information into insightful documents for leadership.• Takes initiative, is eager to take on difficult projects, and able to persevere when confronted with possible roadblocks to success.• Experiments with different approaches while maintaining focus on the project objectives• A natural collaborator confident enough to express their point of view while remaining open and reflective to other opinions
Job Description
- A venture associate proposes and explores new project opportunities in the fintech market by matching unsolved business problems with emerging technologies and research IP. Develops new entrepreneurial ideas, and consults in the industry to identify and address high growth fintech solutions. The venture associate creates and leads succinct project pitches & presents them to senior staff for funding consideration. Ideas are mostly sourced from industry experts inside of banking and academic researchers. A venture associate develops expertise in current industry gaps and sees gaps that no one is talking about.
- Conducts due diligence, operational metrics assessments, competitive analysis, product and technology evaluation, reference calls, and financial and exit modeling. Prioritizes opportunities and creates strategic approach.
- Leads selection process of most promising ideas for development and pitches ideas to senior leadership.
- Gathers industry information and assesses market landscapes while proactively searching for sources of prospect mentors, advisers, partners and applicants.
- Creates strategy to articulate thoughtful analyses into recommendations/business cases for development.
- Proactively identifies, establishes and maintains relationships with academics, consultants, line of business, and subject matter experts.

Work Experience
Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree, with 3+ years of relevant / direct industry experience. Certifications are often desired. In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education and experience (including military service) may be considered.
