The Space Systems Group (SSG) serves as the technical and programmatic advisor to the United States Space Force's (USSF's) Space Systems Command (SSC) [formerly Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC)] for acquiring, developing and fielding capabilities for the United States Space Command and joint warfighter as well as to maintain America's comprehensive military advantage in space.
As the Associate Systems Director for the Demonstration and Technology Department, you will lead Aerospace's efforts supporting SSC's Development Corps to pioneer innovative solutions and rapidly field on-orbit demonstrations and prototypes as well as mature advanced technology to drive the next-generation of space warfighting capabilities. These efforts pave the way for future improved Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) missile warning and missile tracking, military satellite communications (MILSATCOM), Position Navigation and Control (PNT) and Space Based Environmental Monitoring (SBEM) capabilities to better address emerging threats. You will be part of a team supporting numerous fast paced advanced technology programs including work with industry partnersand development of in-house flight prototypes and ground test beds.
What You'll Be Doing
- Assist the Director in leading and managing the Demonstration and Technology Department support to SSC Development Corps
- Provide technical leadership and serve as a primary day-to-day interface for the Government customer to ensure the successful execution of multiple on-orbit and ground demonstrations, prototypes and technology developments
- Plan, organize, tailor and lead agile mission assurance activities to appropriately balance risk tolerance and speed associated with successful fielding of rapid prototype systems
- Lead and participate in concept and architecture design studies together with the SSCSpace SystemsArchitectorganization and external stakeholders to identify and evaluate mitigationsolutionsforemerging threats
- Provide leadership in the development of timely high-quality products that emphasize technical rigor and accountability
- Manage resources to ensure targets are being achieved and that priorities are aligned with customer needs
- Conduct staff performance reviews and other personnel management functions to include hiring, personnel development and mentoring
- Ensure a proactive culture and a cooperative environment across a diverse team involving Aerospace, customer, contractor, SE&I and SETA personnel to enable the rapid delivery of next generation systems
- Communicate regularly with management and customer regarding program status
- Partner across The Aerospace Corporation's engineering matrix organization of space vehicle, ground system and payload subsystem experts to provide the customer with objective, data driven assessments to support programmatic decisions
- Participate in strategic planning and pursue opportunities for additional, expanded and new taskings in support of the Government customer
- Define and execute a program Digital Engineering (DE) strategy and assist in establishing system engineering processes to integrate model-based systems engineering (MBSE) models with mission level modeling and simulation, functional system decomposition and design interface definition associated with the architecture and system CONOPS
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant Engineering, Math or Science subject area
- At least 12 years of progressively more responsible related experience in engineering, science, or space system development
- Track record of leading integrated multidisciplinary teams to develop and field spaceflight prototypes on short timelines with the ability to offer innovative solutions for future concept development and operational transition
- Ability to develop project plans, manage delivery commitments and generate and present deliverables to customers
- Management skills toincludeteam-building, personnel development, performance management, budget and resource planning, and mentoring
- Experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with customer, development contractors, other FFRDCs, SE&I and SETA personnel
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with experience presenting technical products to leadership/customers
- Ability to travel approximately 10 percent of the time
- This position requires a current and active TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government; and U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Masters or Ph.D. from an accredited program in science, math, engineering, or relevant discipline
- Direct experience in space technology research, development, and applications related to OPIR, SBEM, MILSATCOM and PNT missions
- Relevant Government program office acquisition experience to include process, strategy, and cost/schedule/performance/risk trades
- Experience implementing system engineering processes related to requirement development/verification, CONOPS, interface definition/validation, and system level integration
- Thorough understanding of the National Security Space (NSS) space enterprise including the major programs and roles of SSC
- Experience leveraging matrix engineering staff deep technical capabilities with respect to space vehicle, ground system and payload/sensor design trades, analysis, modeling and simulation and hardware/software development
- Thorough understanding of Digital Engineering principles and experience with model-based system engineering (MBSE) tools, data ontologies/standards and model development
- Experience with current space system threats and resiliency considerations
