The Associate Director Medical Science Liaisons is a people leadership MSL role. The primary responsibility of the Associate Director-MSL is to lead a team of Medical Science Liaisons across the US to engage, educate, and support Ordering Providers, Primary Care Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and ObGyns in the delivery of the Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test. This position will also be responsible for directly engaging with KOLs in the primary care setting. Together with their newly created MSL team, the AD will educate providers on the most current clinical, scientific, and health economic materials supporting the clinical value and appropriate safe and effective utilization of GRAIL’s product(s). This is completed through direct education of KOLs with slides, abstracts, and publications relevant to GRAIL’s products and services, responding to unsolicited questions, participating in the development and creation of educational slides, partnering with the Medical Affairs AD education trainer to train speakers/educators, and identifying opportunities for collaboration on educational projects and other projects of mutual interest.


In addition to MSL team lead, in this field-based position, the AD-MSL will also develop and execute an effective Territory Management Plan within their US region and support these activities for their field-based MSL direct reports (reach and frequency of interactions with thought leaders within their regions). Within GRAIL, the AD-MSL will provide medical support to a range of functions, including Medical Affairs, the Commercial organization, and Clinical Development. The AD-MSL will partner with the commercial field team to ensure the MSL field team provides necessary and appropriate medical resources across the US.


This position will ensure that all interactions and activities in the territories adhere to corporate and healthcare compliance guidance, including those related to clinical trials, scientific interactions with internal and external groups, and responses to unsolicited requests for medical/scientific information.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Partner with medical affairs leadership to identify, recruit, on-board and build a team of best in class MSLs across the US. 
  • Manage day-to-day MSL team operations, T&E, and budget requirements.
  • Identify, develop, and/or maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with key community physicians, other key physician influencers, and KOL champions (key decision makers in medical groups, healthcare provider offices, advocacy organizations, and national/regional professional societies) to promote understanding and adoption of GRAIL’s products.
  • Maintain knowledge of cancer diagnostic guidelines.
  • Support ordering providers with appropriate educational materials for post-positive patient journey support.
  • Partner closely with GRAIL’s patient navigator and customer experience team to ensure the best possible experience for providers and patients.
  • Collaborate with GRAIL’s Medical Communication and Marketing teams to support clinical messaging in the development of patient-facing materials related to GRAILs products and utility.
  • Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise related to GRAIL’s products.
  • Participate in local, regional, and national meetings in support of all scientific and medical objectives.
  • Summarize and communicate complex medical messages and position them in the best possible manner to enable clear and concise understanding by both external audiences and partners within GRAIL.
  • Contribute to Journal Clubs critically reviewing relevant new publications and research findings.
  • Assist the Medical Director(s), Director of MSLs, and Medical Affairs lead in agenda planning and meeting facilitation of Ordering Provider-related Scientific Advisory Board(s), support Speaker Training activities as needed.
  • Provide biweekly reports to GRAIL leadership on field activities related to the utility of GRAIL products. Provide quarterly activity reports to summarize field activities and field medical intelligence that would advise internal programs and strategies, along with tracking key performance indicators.
  • Engage in continuous learning, actively attend and participate in upskilling training programs, utilize appropriate resources to stay current with the scientific literature (e.g., conducting regular literature searches and library research), participating in various internal and external clinical and scientific education programs, meetings, presentations and other forums that provide in-depth clinical and operational expertise and insights regarding GRAILs products, overall therapeutic area(s), as well as business related topics relevant to the therapeutic area(s).
  • Be fluent in the value-based scientific information associated with GRAIL’s products from the perspective of payers or others making population-based care decisions.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs leads as clinical resource to the Sales & Marketing team for sales force training, medical updates, scientific presentations, journal clubs, teleconferences, and meetings as requested.
  • Ensure MSL team field insights are disseminated through appropriate GRAIL channels in a timely and effective manner.

Your Background Will Include:

  • Minimum of 3 years of industry experience as a diagnostics or pharmaceutical Sr. Medical Science Liaison. Previous MSL team leader experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience as an MSL in the introduction of novel new clinical products, and experience with MCED, is highly desired.
  • Advanced scientific degree (CGC, PhD, or equivalent degree), experience in oncology, genomics, diagnostics, cfDNA-based applications, or similar applied medical fields strongly preferred.
  • Experience building relationships with and translating complex concepts and data to HCPs in the Primary Care Setting.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstration of effectively leading people and teams in complex highly matrixed environments strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate teams to deliver best-in-class results in fast paced rapidly changing environments.
  • Applies advanced knowledge of the biotechnology, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical industry
  • Ability to apply advanced knowledge of GRAIL’s product specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely while maintaining a strong teamwork ethic and building cohesive and effective team culture.

  • Ability to elicit and answer clinical questions in groups ranging from individuals to larger didactic roundtables and meetings.
  • Ability to address high-level experts in the scientific field at company-sponsored events and scientific conferences.
  • Advanced knowledge of the following computer software programs is essential to the success of this role: G-Suite equivalents of Microsoft Office: Powerpoint, Excel, and Word. Proficiency with SalesForce and Smartsheets interfaces. Generation of G-sheet chart reports and metrics presentations from complex data sets and metrics presentations.
  • Extensive Domestic travel is required up to 3-4 days per week to meet with ordering providers, HCPs in the primary care setting and KOLs, attend physician education talks and conferences, including specialty society scientific meetings (will require some weekend work). Travel is estimated to be approximately 70%.
  • Must be physically able to handle extensive Domestic travel in vehicle, plane, or other modes of public transport.
  • Office may be home-based, and involves extensive use of computer and keyboard while in home office.
