About the Role: 

As Assistant Chief Pilot for Australia you will provide relief to, and carry out many of the duties of, the Chief Pilot, and be responsible for the safe and legal operations of Wing’s fleet of unmanned aircraft. You will manage and be directly responsible for a team of highly experienced flight operations staff. Through your work you’ll also interact and effectively communicate with a team of technicians and field operators to operate the system. The right person for this role will have an in-depth knowledge of the Australian aviation framework and regulatory obligations of a ReOC holder. This position will serve as a backup to the Chief Pilot for Australia in the event of an extended absence and therefore the successful candidate must meet and maintain the qualification requirements to act as a Chief Pilot for our commercial drone delivery service, including passing the CASA Chief Pilot examination and interview. The Assistant Chief Pilot, Australia reports to the Chief Pilot, Australia.

What you’ll do:

  • Oversee the safe and legal daily operation of Wing’s delivery business under the direction of the Chief Pilot for Australia, including ongoing and high volume commercial delivery operations and demonstrations/tests for regulators and their external stakeholders
  • Support the Chief Pilot for Australia in the management of the Australia-based flight operations organisation structure to ensure high efficiency and productivity 
  • Verify and manage compliance with CASA regulations and standards, specifically that operations are conducted in compliance with the Civil Aviation Act 1988, the Regulations and the relevant portions of the part 101 MOS
  • Work closely with Policy, Regulatory, Operations and other teams to help develop our Australia flight operations
  • Partner with the Chief Pilot for Australia on the  numbers and location of aircraft required and work with Fleet Support to ensure sufficient quantity of aircraft are available for commercial delivery operations 
  • Participate in new site evaluation, setup, and approval for commercial operations
  • Develop reports and systems in line with company and regulatory requirements
  • Work closely with the broader Wing Flight Operations team to provide feedback on system performance and improvements for future capabilities 
  • Communicate with other company personnel to safely and effectively operate the system
  • Conduct system, site safety and risk assessments as required
  • Ensure staff are trained and qualified in line with company and regulator expectations

What You'll Need: 

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with an aviation regulatory framework
  • 3 years of experience within a commercial or public RPAS operations, ideally operating BVLOS or other complex operations
  • 5+ years of aviation experience
  • Qualify as a Chief remote pilot, including holding a valid RePL issued by CASA, a pass in the IREX exam or an instrument rating at CPL or above, and an aviation radio qualification. In addition, hold or be willing to train and examine for a RPA Powered lift endorsement
  • Experience with monitoring and control interfaces such as RPA ground control stations, or experience in the design, certification or approval of such solutions
  • Experience with technical or engineering record keeping methods and tools and an understanding of the regulatory record keeping requirements as the apply in Australia
  • Experience with scheduling or coordinating field operations in commercial or public RPAS operations or other industries
  • Aviation English Level 6 pass or educational qualifications which demonstrate a similar level of English proficiency
  • Willingness to work weekends and public holidays
  • Current driver’s licence and clean driving record
  • No medical condition which would prevent obtaining an Aviation medical if required
  • A determination to recruit and foster the development of diverse teams

Compliance Requirements Specific to this Role:

  • Current CASA issued RePL
  • Pass in the IREX examination or an instrument rating
  • Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Wing’s operating procedures

Travel within Australia (up to 30%) required and sometimes for extended periods, COVID and lockdown regulations permitting.
