Mathematica is looking for a mission-driven communications leader to join our team as Sr. Communications Manager. This creative and impact-focused communications professional is ready to apply their substantive knowledge of programs focused on supporting children, families and communities and their proven track record of success in the field of public communications to help engage evidence communities across a variety of sectors. In this role, you will lead a team dedicated to developing, executing, and measuring collaborative and inclusive external dissemination and engagement strategies that lift up voices in the communities we serve and increase visibility of the work we do to improve public well-being.

Responsibilities:
  • Motivate and lead a high-performing team of communications professionals specializing in education, workforce training and development, early childcare and child welfare, and supporting families through nutrition, family planning, cash assistance and other programs designed to strengthen families and communities, across federal, state and local, and philanthropic sectors
  • Translate and disseminate complex policy-relevant evidence through digital and print content; leverage industry best practices and your strong knowledge of UX principles to target, reach, and engage primary and secondary audiences across varied channels
  • Collaborate with social science, data science, and technology colleagues, as well as client representatives and community partners, to co-create strategic messaging, dissemination and engagement plans, and ongoing measurement activities in support of project activities and client goals
  • Author compelling content for the company's external website, announcements, electronic newsletters, blog posts, podcasts, and social media platforms
  • Activate your strong network of journalist and influencer contacts to conceive, pitch, and place stories and op-eds in relevant national, local, and trade media outlets
  • Support planning and implementation of policymaker briefings and events related to Human Services policy evidence and research
  • Design, develop, and execute inclusive thought leadership events and activities that highlight expert voices and diverse perspectives from the field; conceive and implement exhibition strategies for priority industry and professional conferences and events
  • Offer high-value communications counsel and content contributions to internal proposal teams by developing innovative strategies for community engagement and project dissemination


Position Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism, Public Policy, or related field
  • Eight years of progressively responsible, professional-level experience in a government organization, public relations, or a research or policy-oriented organization; deep experience in education, workforce, and family support policies and programs strongly encouraged
  • Excellent supervisory and people manager skills; ability to lead and motivate a high-performing team with moderate resource requirements
  • Strong track record of effectively engaging with community partners and distilling and disseminating policy-relevant evidence
  • Strong commitment to being an active partner in infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion into Mathematica's work and workplace
  • Prior experience and/or advanced knowledge of policy and program issues in child welfare, disability, education, early childhood, employment, family strengthening, and/or food security
  • Demonstrated success communicating technology's role in driving policy insights and program improvements
  • In-depth understanding of communications industry best practices and trends, as well as principles of user experience
  • Excellent writing skills a must; work should require no oversight and minimal editing
  • Exceptional ability to manage a portfolio of projects and competing priorities; strong client service (internal and external) skills and orientation
  • Ability to synthesize and convey, through a variety of platforms and media, complex data and information for diverse audiences
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exercise sound judgment and work independently to accomplish tasks

We welcome applications from candidates who wish to work remotely/virtually full-time.

This position offers an anticipated base salary of $95,000 - $130,000 annually. This position may be eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance.

Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
