JOB SUMMARY:

Manage daily operations of the public affairs function. Develop, plan, and implement public relations campaigns and strategies that advance the company's vision, strategic priorities, and mission with external audiences. Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to identify, develop, and prioritize earned media and social media opportunities, strategies, objectives, and key messages. Cultivate relationships with key local journalists. Manage the development, implementation, and maintenance of public relations policies, procedures, and programs. Manage outside PR counsel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the development, implementation, and administration of the company's public relations programs. Collaborate with internal business partners to develop targeted public relations campaigns and strategies to strengthen the company's reputation and leadership position in the market.
  • Proactively anticipate, analyze, and interpret public opinion, attitudes and issues that might impact the operations or strategic goals and objectives of the company.
  • Measure effectiveness of public relations programs and materials; identify opportunities to enhance programs and maximize value and audience impact.
  • Collaborate with key internal constituents to identify, develop, and prioritize earned and social media opportunities, strategies, objectives, and key messages. Develop programs and activities and coordinate campaigns that successfully implement earned and social media tactics and initiatives.
  • Maintain an updated crisis communications plan including the identification of potential risks and events that may cause significant service disruptions or public impact.
  • Consult on provider communications to ensure messaging and themes follow corporate initiatives and themes.
  • Cultivate relationships with key local journalists and appropriate contacts at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
  • Manage relationship with outside PR counsel. Ensure the agency is providing necessary support for an effective public relations program.
  • Manage company's social media presence on all applicable social media platforms by ensuring appropriate posts and responses are created.
  • Serve as the corporate spokesperson for all media.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A combination of education and related experience
  • Five to seven years of experience in corporate or agency public affairs, including work with major stakeholder groups


Preferred Education, Additional Qualifications and Experience:

  • Understanding of BCBSRI and its position within the state, region, and regulatory environment
  • Understanding of the healthcare industry and related issues


Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

  • Familiarity with media (e.g., local, trade and social), including information gathering techniques and methodologies utilized to prioritize and allocate resources and develop news stories
  • Exceptional communications skills (e.g., verbal, presentation, journalistic writing and editing)
  • Extensive knowledge of the communications process and interrelated disciplines (e.g., advertising, marketing. social media, Web)
  • Extensive knowledge of the use of research and its critical role in the communications process
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional negotiating, influencing, and consensus-building skills
  • Ability to collaborate while dealing with complex situations
  • Ability to think creatively and to drive innovation
  • Ability to motivate, lead and inspire a diverse group to a common goal/solution with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to convert business strategy into action-oriented objectives and measurable results
  • Strong and effective decision-making skills
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite of products (i.e., Word, Excel, PPT, etc.)
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization
