OVERVIEW

Instacart’s Communications team is seeking a Manager, Policy Communications to oversee public relations and strategic communications that advance the company’s policy and government affairs goals and, in doing so, support Instacart’s long-term growth and sustainability. This role will be based in San Francisco.

Reporting to the Director, Policy Communications and working in close partnership with the company’s Policy team and other cross-functional partners, this critical team member will be responsible for helping develop a state legislative playbook and delivering supportive, strategic programming that helps us win important policy victories and win hearts and minds with key stakeholders on the West Coast.

ABOUT THE JOB

Our Manager, Policy Communications will operate as a member of the Communications team that works hand-in-hand in partnership with Instacart’s Policy team (which oversees our government relations and lobbying efforts at the federal, state and city level) and other key partners and stakeholders across the company. As Manager, Policy Communications, your responsibility may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and deliver strategic communications that advance policy priorities, including reactive and proactive communications and outreach
  • Develop effective messaging and rapid response for federal, state and city policy issues
  • Drive key Instacart narratives through earned stories in outlets across multiple markets
  • Work with industry coalitions to shape and coordinate campaigns and key initiatives
  • Leverage economic research for storytelling to drive earned articles in key markets
  • Advance our policy agenda and policy brand through strategic thought leadership work
  • Provide internal communications support on key policy issues and developments  
  • Collaborate regularly with Shopper, Corporate, Consumer, Internal, and Employer Brand communications colleagues on cross-purpose initiatives that support multiple objectives 
  • Provide strategic counsel and guidance to Policy team partners 

ABOUT YOU

As Manager, Policy Communications, you will have managed press relations, external agencies, coalition partners, and internal constituencies. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be/have:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in communications, policy communications, government affairs, political campaigns, and/or crisis communications
  • Experience with strategic storytelling, building relationships with journalists and other key stakeholders, and being proactive when it comes to press outreach
  • Experience communicating on complex legal and policy-related topics to multiple stakeholders; familiarity with technology and/or labor policy issues is a nice to have
  • Solutions-oriented to help develop creative answers to complex problems
  • Acts gracefully under pressure both internally and externally with key stakeholders
  • Emphasizes collaboration with the immediate team and with cross-functional partners
  • Proven ability to influence and build consensus with stakeholders
  • Holds themselves and others accountable for their work and commitments
  • Outcome-focused and motivated by delivering measurable results
  • Humble in approach and relationships
  • Empathetic in style and approach, considerate of all four sides of Instacart’s dynamic marketplace
  • Loves communications and storytelling, with excellent speaking, writing, and editing skills
