About You

The Head of Internal Communications will be responsible for the development, planning, and execution of the overall internal communications strategy for Abnormal. In this role, you will develop, lead, and implement internal communications strategies to support the company's brand, culture, purpose, and direction. The ideal candidate is resourceful, has the drive to take ownership of complex tasks and projects, customer-focused and team oriented, has the ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, reacts effectively to dynamic challenges in a fast-paced, high intensity environment, independently prioritize activities to deliver the results that our globally expanding business needs, and enjoys the challenges of developing and improving processes in a dynamic organization. They are highly autonomous and have a proven track record in taking on end-to-end ownership and successfully delivering results in a fast-paced business environment. The successful candidate will also have exceptional organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills, superior attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment. Moreover, the ability to build and earn trust, work in a cross-functional, dynamic and ambiguous area is imperative.

In this job, you will bring these skills…

  • A skilled storyteller and enjoys translating the hard work of our team into words and visuals.
  • 7+ years of work experience in internal communications, journalism, politics, or marketing in a consumer company, tech, or banking environment
  • Experience building an internal communications program from the ground up, or moving an already existing internal communications program to the next level
  • Expertise in creative platforms - including visual & multimedia - as effective communications tools
  • Think outside of the box to enhance engagement with creative communication strategies that include immersive and/or interactive communication models, where applicable
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an innate attention to detail and the ability to articulate a clear point of view on complicated issues in clear, concise communications.
  • Experience working with internal communications platforms and tools (e.g., Slack, Wikis)
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where tactical and strategic activities are expected to be driven in parallel.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and implement ideas from ideation and development to measurement and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience building trust and influencing cross-functional teams and senior leaders.
  • Experience owning program strategy, end to end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership
  • Ability to exercise high judgment, particularly in narrow time-frames.
  • An agile, flexible individual with a “can-do”, problem-solving attitude and approach to managing ambiguity in a fast-evolving environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience creating and editing content: digital, written, video, and visual communications materials.
  • Experience owning organizational communications strategy, from audience and stakeholder analysis through implementation and success metrics tracking.

Role Responsibilities + Deliverables

  • Develop internal communications strategies to increase employee engagement, and connect employees to the team’s overall business goals. While broad, organizational-wide communications should be adopted, level or role specific communications and engagement strategies should be implemented to drive engagement for particular audiences.
  • Provide consultation to Abnormal leadership for content development and best practices related to monthly employee communication messages, All Hands, and other org-specific communication needs.
  • Oversee change management responsibilities for any Abnormal-wide business changes.
  • Work cross-functionally to define key themes, messages, and objectives to drive awareness, engagement, and cascade information to teams with unique functions and communication needs.
  • Write compelling and effective messaging and content for a variety of audiences and channels including (but not limited to) leadership messages, blogs, newsletters, announcements, videos, presentations, and events.
  • Create a global strategy for how we better engage our employees across the globe for in-person engagement summits and activities.
  • Build and maintain self-service resources (e.g. centralized wiki) for a one-stop shop of news and information.
  • Build toolkits, templates, and processes to promote self-service and communication best practices across the organization.
  • Assist with the preparation of internal and external speaking events for Abnormal leaders
  • Develop and implement company-wide internal communication strategies and programs that engage, inspire, and align employees with Abnormal’s brand, vision, priorities, and key initiatives.
  • Develop scalable channel strategy (Slack vs Email) to share information and ensure employees are kept apprised of key activities in a distributed remote first work environment. Oversee, generate and/or edit written and visual content and messaging for these channels.
  • Partner with the executive leadership team on comms strategies for their organizations. 
  • Partner with People Team (Success Partners, and Talent Brand) to Design and implement employee engagement activities to promote awareness and adoption of the brand, build internal brand ambassadors.
  • Develop best practices/KPIs to enable continuous improvement of the internal communications function.
  • Serve as key internal brand ambassador for Abnormal
  • Liaise with public relations, content marketing and brand strategy to ensure integrated communications planning and execution.
