The Senior Principal Legal Counsel provides direct support for US legal privacy matters as a member of Medtronic's Data & Privacy Center of Expertise. This seasoned professional provides privacy legal support for operational execution and progammatical compliance with US privacy requirements. The Senior Principal Legal Counsel is a key resource and strategic partner for privacy professionals in the Data & Privacy COE, partner functions such as the Global Security Office and IT Architecture, and key leaders in business and regional teams.

To be successful, individuals in this position require broad legal experience, coupled with US privacy expertise, and demonstrated abilities to (1) form productive relationships; (2) navigate highly matrixed business operations; (3) influence without direct authority; (4) identify and address complex legal issues and risks; and (5) advise on innovative strategies within a global function.

The Senior Principal Legal Counsel reports to the Legal Director - Americas in the Data & Privacy COE. The preferred, but not required, location for this position is Minneapolis, MN.

A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

The Senior Principal Legal Counsel provides a broad range of legal advice, guidance and direct support for data protection and privacy compliance, analyzes complex legal issues, and identifies appropriate business and operational legal advice, solutions and strategies to limit/mitigate/remediate legal and business risks. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading by example to model a culture of ethics and integrity; exercising sound judgment and courage as a trusted advisor to the business and to the team;
  • Providing strategic and proactive legal counsel to create innovative solutions to complex legal issues for digital innovation, digital health, big data, artificial intelligence privacy-by-design;
  • Serving as an escalation point, problem-solver, and legal expert for privacy professionals, lawyers, and commercial stakeholders working on day-to-day issues and strategic initiatives;
  • Advising on risk-based compliance monitoring activities in collaboration and coordination with the broader Data & Privacy COE;
  • Providing legal advice, guidance and support on a wide variety of U.S.-based privacy program legal needs, including privacy impact assessment (PIA) activities, privacy by design needs, HIPAA program management, data transfer, contracting, incident remediation, clinical support, M&A support, and other programmatic needs;
  • Collaborating effectively across Medtronic business units and functions, primarily IT Architecture, Security, and Government Affairs;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned from time to time.


Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • JD from a well-regarded and accredited university, with admission to practice law in Minnesota or at least one State
  • 8+ years as a practicing lawyer with experience and knowledge of US laws and legal risks relating to privacy, cybersecurity, consumer technology, and/or technical engineering

Nice to Have

  • Deep knowledge of and experience providing legal advice and business solutions relating to US data protection and privacy laws and regulations - with specific expertise relating to healthcare, medical devices, pharma and/or consumer privacy;
  • Experience representing highly technical companies working with advanced data business models, including use of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, edge computing, and other cutting-edge technologies;
  • Experience providing legal advice, support and business solutions for a large, regulated and matrixed organization, whether in private practice or in-house roles;
  • Familiarity with various compliance standards, security controls, audit processes, or certifications, e.g. ISO, NIST, SOC, etc.;
  • Experience advising companies on direct-to-consumer programs based upon deep interconnectivity with those consumers;
  • Strong ability to influence across functions and businesses to negotiate and gain cooperation on operational issues and internal divergent objectives;
  • Demonstrated results orientation (driving to deadlines, financial targets, project goals, etc.);
  • Demonstrated ability to work across a matrixed or virtual organization, build strategic partnerships, and meet objectives;
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to present to a variety of audiences including the ability to translate technical information;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously;
  • Excellent advocacy, negotiation, communication, and decision-making skills;
  • Adept at analyzing and interpreting laws and regulations and providing actionable guidance;
  • Demonstrated experience building positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including with employees, clients, senior management, external parties/authorities and suppliers.
