Under technical direction of an attorney, provides advanced legal support services to internal and external counsel with an emphasis on matters related to legal litigation and defense or corporate matters. May deal with highly sensitive information.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Manages complex legal files and records for discovery, investigation and processing including the monitoring and management of compliance filings, discovery, motion, hearing, expert designation and other actions in accordance with critical deadlines. Follows up on investigation or information requests. Gathers, prepares and organizes reports, exhibits, documents, trial data and other materials in response to management requests, subpoenas, discovery requests, interrogatories, motions for summary judgment etc.; arranges for extensions of time as needed. Prepares records for expert review. Prepares compliance related filings as needed.
  • Performs timely handling of highly sensitive issues and materials related to all areas of operation within the organization. Collaboratively works with internal and external legal staff on various projects. Responds to information requests. May provide advice to client groups on a variety of issues such as employment and immigration of non-US citizens, investigation of internal discrimination charges etc.
  • Analyzes contracts, reports, financial data, depositions, discovery, investigative and other documents, preparing summaries of same as requested.
  • Reviews client/business files providing oversight and suggestions to attorneys and others on appropriate action steps. May interview clients, witnesses and others as required. May locate, contact and act as liaison for expert witnesses in a variety of fields.
  • Drafts reports, contracts, opinions, position papers, filings, pleadings, motions, interrogatories and other documents as necessary and assures organization of supporting files. Drafts legal documents in compliance with court requests and applicable federal, state, local or administrative regulations. Drafts and prepares correspondence and other written documents as required.
  • Monitors files and escalates issues requiring attorney involvement. May handle tracking and disposition of subpoenas or other requests for information.
  • Performs complex legal research and keeps current with procedures used by local, state and federal courts or administrative agencies. Reviews and keeps current on evolving case law and new legislation affecting compliance and litigation within area of expertise.
  • May be required to timely and accurately record tasks and time in billing system and meet minimum billing requirements in addition to performing non-billable tasks.
  • Maintains internal records in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.


May perform additional duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationship: Typically Manager or above
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge and application of legal research tools, legal theories and insurance practices.
  • Requires a strong working knowledge of area of specialization (litigation defense, coverage, policy interpretation)
  • Strong analytical and drafting skills.
  • Excellent internal/external customer interactive skills.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office suite, legal research tools and business related software systems such as TeamConnect, Adobe, SmartDraw or others.
  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical issues in a clear, concise and effective manner.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, and/or completion of an accredited paralegal program, or equivalent.
  • Typically three to five years of prior paralegal experience in area of responsibility (corporate, employment, securities, regulatory, defense litigation, coverage litigation).
  • Insurance background preferred.
