Senior Intellectual Property Counsel

Team:
The Legal team at Relativity Space is responsible for identifying and managing risks across the organization to ensure Relativity is adequately protected through its rapid growth. Our legal team manages intellectual property, contracts, and ensuring compliance, among other responsibilities. Unique to Relativity’s fast-paced startup environment, this team is given the opportunity to work across many teams to support Relativity's ambitious goal of building the world’s first entirely 3D printed rocket.
What you'll do:
Our Senior IP Counsel will oversee Relativity’s intellectual property roadmap and partner closely with other teams, including Engineering & Manufacturing and Launch & Infrastructure to identify, develop and protect Relativity’s intellectual property rights. You will help support and scale Relativity’s IP efforts as we continue to develop our factory of the future, partnering closely with our engineering teams to protect the value of their innovations. We will rely on your legal judgment and expertise to help manage our IP portfolio and prosecute our IP rights. You are unafraid to help leaders and employees see the big picture, you deliver legal advice with confidence and you are comfortable advising on decisions with significant legal and commercial implications. You are willing to present creative solutions to challenges you come across and tackle tough issues, all while being driven by a strong ethical compass and legal considerations.
This role will be on site in Long Beach.
As our primary IP counsel, you will:
- Develop and scale our invention mining and disclosure processes, conducting patent harvest sessions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify patentable subject matter.
- Actively manage and develop our patent portfolio.
- Work closely with business development and engineering teams to develop US and foreign patenting strategy.
- Manage our trademark and copyright portfolio.
- Develop and manage our open source compliance program.
- Provide strategic advice on technology and IP licensing initiatives.
- Manage outside IP counsel to ensure quality and timely work product.
- Train engineering and business teams on IP issues and provide counsel on IP in commercial and corporate matters, including managing third party IP risks.
What you need to know:
- JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Admitted to and member in good standing of the California bar, or another state with ability to become registered in-house counsel in California.
- 6+ years of relevant legal experience and admitted to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
- Relevant technical background or demonstrated understanding of additive manufacturing, robotics, and/or software, preferably related to AI/machine learning.
- Experience building and managing an international patent portfolio, including developing IP strategies to support business goals.
- Experience preparing and prosecuting patents worldwide, including patentability analysis and patent claiming strategies.
- Experience identifying and handling trade secrets protections.
- Knowledge of industry tools and resources.
- Some experience assessing and advising engineering and business teams on managing third party IP risks.
Nice to haves but not required:
- Prior experience working in a startup environment or demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively with engineering and business teams.
- Experience working in the aerospace and defense industry.
- Experience with trademark prosecution and open source compliance
