Who We Are:

At Calm, we have a simple, albeit BIG mission: to make the world a happier and healthier place. Through our website, blog, and app—filled with meditations, sleep stories, music, movement, and more—we’re redefining what mental care looks like in 2021 and beyond. With over 100 million users worldwide, 100,000 new users daily, and our growing partnerships with major companies, we’re having a positive effect on more and more people each and every day. And while the heart of Calm is digital, we are growing and expanding offline with a variety of products and services to help deliver on our mission of health and happiness, the world over.

What We Do:

Calm is growing its content library and gaining more exposure every day. Because of this new growth, the number of contracts is climbing, and the nature of our branded relationships is becoming more complex. Copyright, trademark, and rights of publicity are underlying parts of these contracts, as well as relationships that require Calm content to be distributed on other platforms. Experience with these legal issues is crucial for candidates looking to help grow the legal team into the future.

What You’ll Do:

We are looking for an exceptional attorney who is passionate about our product and committed to advancing Calm’s mission of making the world a healthier and happier place.  In this role, you will work hand-in-hand with cross-functional stakeholders to provide agile and practical legal counsel and enable them and the broader team to excel.  You will be the consummate team player, deeply valued for your knowledge of our product and our business, and for diving into nuanced issues and work streams with a “can do” attitude.  This role will report to the Head of Trust, IP, Privacy and Consumer Product Counseling and will work closely with members of the content, product, people and engineering teams, among others.

  • Use your vision and nuanced analysis to develop and defend our global intellectual property portfolio, including through registrations, oppositions, cease and desists, and other escalations
  • Become a deeply valued resource to our cross-functional partners due to your ability to see around corners and provide practical counsel on litigation risk across the legal frameworks relevant to our product
  • Assist on any prelitigation matters, litigations, and regulatory inquiries as they arise
  • Become a well-loved partner to the people team, providing deep support across a range of employment law matters
  • Develop an intimate understanding of our tech stack and product so you are best equipped to enable creative product development and high impact launches

Who You Are:

  • Member in good standing of the California, Illinois or New York Bar
  • 3+ years of experience as an attorney, preferably with some experience as in-house counsel
  • Enjoys building out existing and new subject matter expertise across a range of areas and has experience with at least two of the following:  IP portfolio development and protection; litigation; investigations; employment matters; and consumer product and protection laws and regulations
  • Adept at anticipating risk and seeing around corners but does not suffer from analysis paralysis
  • Consummate team player who thrives on helping others succeed and has a can-do attitude
  • Very high EQ and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent at multitasking and managing competing priorities
  • Intellectually curious and tech savvy

We believe that mental health is health, and every person should be considered in the discussion. That’s why we’re proud to be an equal opportunity workplace, committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local law.

Calm is deeply committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, both in our hiring practices and in our experiences as a Calm employee. We strive to create a mindful and respectful environment where everyone can bring their authentic self to work, and experience a culture that is free of harassment, racism, and discrimination.

What are Calm Perks + Benefits

Calm Benefits Overview

We're committed to supporting our team in every aspect of their personal and professional lives. That goes way beyond 'perk's. We offer a competitive benefits package for health, dental, and vision and give monthly stipends for health and fitness routines too. When we say PTO is "Take What You Need", we really mean it, whether that's a mental health day, or a trip around the world. Your home office should be as functional and inspirational as an in-person office. We'll give you a WFH stipend to help! Your family is a vital part of community too and that's why we offer baby bonding leave to all salaried employees. Calm can only grow if you do - so we offer great salary, equity, a 401(k), and even a generous extended learning budget. Our calendar of (virtual) social events ensures you always feel part of, and close with, the team, no matter where you are.
